This is Citizens United, the folks behind that Supreme Court thing, celebrating the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell by warning you homosexuals that your lobbying for the right to serve openly means Obama is going to bring back the draft and round up all homosexuals for service. Nice going, Lady Gaga! (Oh where, oh where, have we heard this before?)

Well, I for one think the draft is the ONLY way to go. If there is a proper draft (without a way to weasel out) then the poor wouldn’t disproportionately carry this burden. If there was a truly fair way to draft people, then the sons and daughters of rich people would die in wars too.
And trust me, the only way to make sure a war is fought only when needed, and for as long as needed is when the children of the elite are forced to take part.

@Joe: Well, said, Joe. Also, this would eliminate the need for the government to hire mercenaries…err, I mean, civillian contractors who rape and pillage….I mean, overcharge our government to do the same job that a U.S. soldier will do for a fraction of the cost.
Mac McNeill
@Joe: Actually the rich just buy their way out or get their Senator/Represenative to make sure they’re assigned to a cushy job. The rich kids don’t serve in the military unless they absolutely want to go, then they need mommy’s and daddy’s approval.

Boo! Scaaaary scary stuff from the right wingnut assholes who would degrade everything for kicks if enough of us bought in to their BS. I don’t think they’re even looking for profits anymore, just plain and simple naked power, whatever the costs. So, let me get this straight, Draft=War is bad? Since when, I thought you all were flinty warrior muthafuckas, no? You neo-con psychos have been playing with the United States like it was just so many lego blocks for far too long. Talk about out of touch.

If there’s a draft, I move to Canada.

There’s a draft gathering. It’s very windy, and I am afraid.

I like how someone would blame Lady Gaga for helping repeal DADT in a bad context but not the other way around. Bigots.
TR
Pretty sure being gay didn’t exclude you from a draft in the first place.
Mac McNeill
TR actually in the 70’s being gay was one of the foremost reasons for being excluded from being inducted. Many of guys used that as a reason for trying to get out of the draft.

I’d rather live in a country where I may be drafted if the need comes and serve as an out gay man than live in a country where I am not allowed to even voluntarily enter the armed forces because of my sexuality.
Actually, I really think we should have a system more like Germany where after high school you either have to go to college, go to the armed forces or go do a few years of public service “civies”. When I was studying in Germany I spent a week in a youth hostel and besides the kids in my group the entire place was kids getting ready to go do their civies half were going to be nurses aids for 2 years and the other half were doing public construction projects like building roads.

I see this video and the only thing I can actually think is that it is missing a certain man with a really bad mustache.
Are they really trying to make their videos look like love letters to the Neo-Nazi movement now or what?
Adrian Acosta
has anyone read the comments on the youtube page of this video? got to it. WARNING: the level of ignorance in the YT comments will make your head explode!!!! I guess it’s to be expected when people use scare tactics in videos like this.
DADT may be a thing of the past but we have to keep educating the masses.

I sensed a draft, a towel placed by the door did the trick, whats this whole Gay thingy about now???? :p
Brandon
i swear this site never seems to report anything in a positive light…

There has been little protest to the wars in the last ten years ONLY because we have had the volunteer armed forces. If the draft ever came back, you can bet on every mother leaving her shopping cart in the aisles of Whole Foods to protect their babies. And that you can send to the bank.

I don’t know about a draft, seems improbable. As of August of this year, Military recruiters were turning away obese applicants in record numbers. If anything they may have to start taking overweight applicants. There has been issues with recruiting for years, but it is not a gay issue. it is an “overweight American” issue. Could there possibly be a draft in the future? Possibly, but let’s not sit idly by and accept blame for yet another problem that we had nothing to do with. And having said that, I actually encourage young people to do a few years in the Military before or in lieu of College. Especially now that DADT is a day away from being history. The Military is not nearly as homophobic as a lot of people like to make it. I have several friends that are still enlisted and trust me, most of the people predicting doom and gloom for the Military are sitting behind the keyboards of their computers feigning outrage, probably having never served or having served years and years ago. The Military can be a great place to start, for those that really don’t know what they want to do with the rest of their lives. I joined when I was 17, with parental permission, did six years, learned valuable skills. Not a bad thing to do voluntarily.

Instituting a draft would be the quickest way to get the U.S. out of overseas wars. The thought that their kids could be drafted would cause voters to flee any party that is pushing for the expansion of wars. Remember, the U.S. wanted to stay out of WW2. It was only after we were attacked that public sentiment turned. Same would be true today.

… not exactly. The (reported) casualty rates have been far lower as well, which means less public outcry, although the numbers were fudged during the Bush administration (and maybe the current one too), misleading the public by making the rate look lower than it really was. In any case, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_of_the_Iraq_War#U.S._armed_forces U.S. casualties for Iraq totaled 4404 as of May 28, 2010. Try http://www.bbsradio.com/cgi-bin/webbbs/archive_config.pl?md=read;id=4873 for an article claiming to show a copy of a letter from several members of congress complaining to Bush about the underreporting.
One way to fudge combat casualties is to require that someone fatally injured actually died in Iraq (as opposed to on an airplane carrying him/her to a hospital in another country for treatment).
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/11/19/60minutes/main656756.shtml has an article about other underreporting issues.

@Brandon: My sentiments exaclty. It’s actually depressing sometimes.
Spike
Oh good lord, the draft would be no different from jury duty, if you don’t want to do it, all you have to do is act unstable ape shit crazy, and if you want to lean in the direction of gay, show up with glow sticks and complete every application/question with a Lady Gaga lyric.
Rock in a Sock
I won’t be afraid of a draft, as long as all dogs will be in the mix. If you can walk and breathe and pull a trigger you are military material. Yeah I know there will be some that will wiggle out of it, but they will make their reasons to exclude themselves. The surest cure for useless wars will be that all the country’s citizens will face equal risk regardless of status
ewe
@B: That has nothing to do with what i was commenting on. If casualties occur, the american public has always given itself the emotional out of saying that everyone in the armed forces were there voluntarily hence they knew the risks. If the mandatory draft were to be reinstated the public would be much more judgemental toward a hierarchy who would have to answer what ideology justifies body bags coming home of those forced to enlist against their will. It would not be pretty and it would not suffice.

Citizens United is just trying to enrage their followers so they’ll cough up more ca$h to keep teh gheys from “special” rights!
I actually considered going into the military as a linguist, several years ago, but my parents were VERY against that idea: a) because of DADT and b) because they”re pretty much against war.
@B.: Thanks for the info on the under-reporting. Three guys from my hometown died in the current war, but only two of them were counted officially.
@Plays Well: When it gets “drafty” wear a rainbow scarf! Mine is gray and doesn’t work well…. :-p
Protoss
@Brandon: I agree, I hate this site for exactly that reason. I always stop by now and again to see if it’s changed. I’m always disappointed.
Diz
@SpiffyShindigs: Same here, guess I might meet you there lol

Bring it on. We should have a mandatory civil service requirement like the IDF in Israel, to help our kids grow up and learn some values and responsibility. Maybe then my generation wouldn’t be so fucking entitled and spoiled and lost.
