Clay Aiken is not afraid to speak out on things that are not right. He know whatever he says will be published somewhere, yet he feels that it is important to speak out and maybe lose some fans. That takes guts!!

I’m happy that Clay has finally become the political animal I always knew he would be.

I’m happy to see that assholes like Skip Stam (good lord, sounds like his Mama consulted a gameshow host name generator) are being exposed for the bigots that they are, and people are responding appropriately.

But at this moment I’m most happy to see that members of the gay community are supporting Clay Aiken’s right to be himself, whether or not they have ever been fans of his, and telling off those who continue to insult him for “fun”. You curse him for being in the closet (as if you’ve never been in one yourself), you curse him for coming out, then you curse him for *being* out. Piss-poor way to treat family, if you ask me.

I will address the fact that Clay is never afraid to speak his mind, whether you agree or not. He seems to be an intelligent and well informed individual who is willing to take a stand, popular or not. I admire his spunk! He seems to not be afraid of being “popular” but following his confictions. Yeah maybe he was late to the game but he seems to making up for lost time now. Good for him! Bigotry is a travesty in any form!

Kids will continue to bully as long as they see adults doing the same. As long as we allow Queerty and PH to bully, it is a lost cause!!

Who cares what they think of Clay as long as they get the word out about a bigoted elected official who thinks bullying gay kids is okay. Clay knows he’s going to get slammed no matter he does or says. It ain’t right but it is what it is. He doesn’t need or want you defending him. By doing so, you drown out the message.

I’m glad the bullying bill passed and I hope Clay and friends can get this bigot out of the NC House of Representatives.

Good comment, girl! Although it’s true that many of Clay’s fans have deserted him, myself, and many others, have not. A person should not have to be ‘nonhetero’ to appreciate the unfairness that society has demonstrated towards a significant segment of our society. In all honesty, this ‘segment’ accounts for a HUGE proportion of the artistic talent in the entire world. It should be obvious to all, especially those who love the Arts and Culture aspects of our society, that the world would be an exceedingly drab place were it not for this valuable segment of society.

It’s sad that one has to fight so tenaciously for the mere crumbs the government tosses out towards this group. And, yes, you must keep up the good fight for the sake of your kids. Clay is fighting for the rights of his son, as well as the rest of those opposed by unfair laws. If only every gay person had the courage to stand up and say ‘Yes, I’m gay! God made me this way! Who are you to question God’s decision to do so?’ Society would be shocked to see the HUGE numbers of people they are actually living and working with each day.

As for Aiken, I say live and let live. You can’t hold the past against someone forever. There’s enough high profile people STILL hiding in the closet that are happily doing NOTHING for us. If he wants to enlighten his fans and others about GLBT causes, I say go for it.

Sean, are you a person who is gay. If so, I can’t believe you could criticize someone for coming out of the closet when they personally felt the time was right. Although inroads have been made, I think coming out of the closet takes a lot of courage for any person who is gay & esp someone in the public eye who may have a lot at stake.

Clay did do a Christmas concert at the church in Wichita, however, I think the assurances you mention are a myth …. you can’t believe everything you read. BTW, I was at that concert as were several people who run that church …. they were thrilled to have him.

And, I think Clay could have continued to pretend (to use your words) – he chose not to.

His fans are very supportive of him & his causes & that goes for being gay & living it ….

Even while publicly closeted, Aiken was out to everyone in his life, friends, family coworkers, neighbors & encouraged his fans to accept EVERYONE. He employed other gays & publicly stated to his church, fans & EVERYONE that he believed that God loves & accepts gays & therefore everyone else should as well. He’s NEVER been against the gay community – it’s some in the gay community who’ve been against him for simply living his life & coming to his own acknowledgment of himself when it was right for him & his family – just like everyone else in our community is allowed to. There are hundreds if not thousands of prominent well-known gay celebrities who haven’t come out for decades. How about ragging on them for a while & leaving an OUT & PROUD brother alone?

But, I do not blame Clay fans for rallying around Clay. The headline for this article and the other articles written about him are all so negative. WHY??? More emphasis would be on the topic if Queerty was fair in their reporting.

CHILDREN NEED TO BE PROTECTED. (In school, that is usually from other children.) Focus on that fact. Energy is wasted when people squabble among themselves — or among social factions — and get caught up in their own issues.

It IS interesting how Clay has become the gay man it’s PC to mock and bash. Straight or gay, you can make a nasty or homophobic slur against Clay and everyone just laughs and thinks it’s hysterical. It makes no sense (especially given that he seems to be a good, talented, and generous guy). Bullying, homophobia, discrimination–none of those things are laughing matters but as long as we do unto others what we don’t like to see done to ourselves, the issues persist.
