Coming Out's Overrated

Radar's new issue celebrates 100 of the world's most overrated people, places and things. Check out #43:

Honestly, would you rather a) lie to friends and family about your true self, or b) come out of the closet and proudly take your place alongside the likes of Carson Kressley, Steven Cojocaru, Perez Hilton, Alan Cumming, Lance Bass and Rosie O'Donnell?

Hmm, well…that is a tough one.

Well, when you put that way! How about levels of coming out. Gay, Really Gay, Outrageously Gay, and Obnoxiously-won't-you-please-go-back-into-the-closet Gay?

I think Radar is the most awesome publication that exist on the planet earth.

The writers are witty, cleaver, and they all have large cocks, except for the chicks.

If everyone in the world read Radar there would be no war in the Middle East and Britney would be sober.

A silly question. The folks on the list, especially Kressley, couldn't come out, since it is impossible they were ever in.

Becks?? never overrated!! Posh?? has ALWAYS been overrated…

i like that coming out is overrated… because it's true. Neil Patrick Harris is kind of proving that. so is Ellen.

then again… Bobby Trendy keeps popping up……

You can't get more overrated than the boring Beckhams.

How quaint; straight people telling gay people what is over rated. Neil and Ellen are benefiting form those that have gone before them and making it possible for others. Not the over valued celebs, but for ordinary people. Until equality is achieved, being out will be a potent and empowering thing to do.

As an aside, I used to teach for LAUSD. I taught about the Harlem Renaissance. The AA teachers would throw an embolism when I made it a point that they kept all their Black Gay writers in the closet. Such bigotry. They are geniuses as long as you don't mention the homosexuality. Lo'dy, lo'dy! That is why my personal hero is Bayard Rustin.

Oh I forgot that this was a shallow publication.

Come on now, it's a humor mag first. No need to take it so seriously. Overrated lists are overrated by their nature anyway. Despite that, I think Radar's an great magazine.

Wow, offensive much? That blurb basically says, "Hey gays! We don't want you to have any visibility! Lie about your true self and stay in the closet!"

Alan Cummings as Dionysius in Scottish National Theater's produciton of The Bacchae is one of the most important stagings of Greek Tragedy in years. In this, Cummings is not overrated.
