A man professing love for The Golden Girls is pretty much the same as coming out, but a New York City Councilman decided to do both with a single tweet.
New York City Council member James Vacca decided to come out on Friday, presumably during a Golden Girls marathon:
Blanche would be so proud.
60-year-old Bronx representative Vacca gave us a bit more in a statement he released to the media:
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
“At this point in my life I’ve decided to publicly come out as a gay man. Every person has their own journey and I am fortunate to be able to make the decision to come out on my own terms. My orientation is an innate part of who I am and I want my friends, family, colleagues, and constituents to share in this part of my life. I don’t want a spectacle or media event; instead I just want your respect as another human being.”
We get it, but you can’t come out and profess your love for The Golden Girls without expecting a tiny bit of media attention.
Vacca got nothing but love from the City Council’s LGBT Caucus as well as New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo, but it’s the exchange with another council member that really let us know where he stands when it comes to our favorite sassy septuagenarians:
We’re #teamsophia but we won’t hold it against you, Councilman Vacca. Welcome Out!

I waver between Rose and Blanche.
Actually, I’m a bit of them all. Aren’t most folks?

Rose is narcissistic while Dorothy is the no BS pragmatist. Perfect personalities.

Be careful up in the Bronx. All the guys are super “macho” up there, even though we know they’re all on the DL.
