Cyndi Lauper will reportedly put her whole life on display, with husband David Thornton and son Declyn, in a new reality show from mega-producer Mark Burnett. If they name it This Girl Just Wants To Have Fun, I’m not watching. (Fine, that’s a lie.)

PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS
Yay for her! Cyndi was one of the first celebs to be quite vocal in her support for the Gays and has never wavered………..

It’s a shame that someone as talented as Cyndi has to resort to reality shows to promote her music.

Great, another washed up reality show….
Where is the surreal life when you need it!

Better than naming it She Bop…

I love Cyndi, and she’ll no doubt have lots of LGBT related stuff in there, so seems like a great idea all around.
BobP
She has ALWAYS supported us and we should return the favor.

Cyndi Lauper is awesome. I have no idea why she is doing this, but hopes she is happy doing it.

And once again, you mis-spell a very famous woman’s name right there in the headline.

I loved her when I was a kid, so I think I’ll have a look at the show. I don’t know if it’s a wise choice to include her family in the concept though. I mean – so far her son has been kept out of the spotlights and suddenly he’ll be followed by cameras and be visible on TV. I’m not sure if that’s such a good thing for a twelve-year old kid. It might turn him into an unpleasant, spoiled bastard – look at those Will Smith-kids for example.
I don’t know about her motives – she made all kinds of bad decisions in her career so far, so that’s nothing new.
At least she’ll have “The Gays” who will always continue to cheer for her, flooding the internet with 5 star-ratings of everything she does – even when it’s as awful as her recent dance torture “Bring Ya To The Brink”.It’s like they feel obliged to always praise her beyond proportion.
And when you say that you don’t like every crap she puts out, be prepared to be called homophobic – which is pretty weird when you’re queer yourself. I just think we shouldn’t automatically call everything she does an act of genius just because she’s been such a loyal friend to the gay community.
My experience is that whenever you say something negative about her music you get shouted down and insulted by a bunch of bitchy queens. In my experience her fans tend to be a bit too devoted and aggressive in case of dissent. I wonder what that says about her. She seems to attract the overenthusiastic.
Tommy
@Andy: Andy, I definitely don’t have stereotypical “gay” taste in music and culture so I can sort of see your point. But Cyndi is actually talented with a great voice, so I don’t think people who are fans of her are fans just because of her outspokeness about gay issues.
I thought Bring Ya to the Brink was a really good dance album. So was Sisters of Avalon.
I wish she could be more focused and stick with those kind of dance and pop/rock albums that suit her voice better. I’ve heard that her new blues album is a real disaster. At Last, her covers album of standards was pretty bad too. She definitely has talent but is too self indulgent and goes off on weird tangents.

@ Andy
“My experience is that whenever you say something negative about her music you get shouted down and insulted by a bunch of bitchy queens.”
That sounds like bitchy queen talk, to me.
Maybe people like the depth of her songs, her ability to write and sing lyrics that connect to something deeper than f*cking, which is the norm in pop music. Maybe it’s the soulfulness in her voice or the unapologetic celebration of who she is; An outsider, just like gay people.
“And when you say that you don’t like every crap she puts out, be prepared to be called homophobic –”
That sounds like an exaggeration to me and it sounds like you think you are the final authority on what crap is. Very dramatic!
Here are some lyrics to three of her songs. It might help you understand why people connect deeply with her.
Miss Sally’s Pigeons:
“On the dresser sits a frame
With a photograph
Two little girls in ponytails
Some twenty one years back
She left one night with just a nod
Was lost from some back alley job…”
Who Let In The Rain:
I make the bed and cover
Where you used to sleep
I’m smoothing over promises
Made in these sheets
I envy lovers passing by
Out on the street
‘Cause what they have
I couldn’t keep…
Madona Whore:
Every woman’s a Madonna; every woman’s a whore
You can try to reduce me but I’m so much more
I don’t want to be your mother; won’t be shoved in a drawer
cause every woman’s a Madonna, every woman’s a whore, that’s right
“In my experience her fans tend to be a bit too devoted and aggressive in case of dissent.”
You come across as extremely judgmental and in need of controlling others experiences. It’s as if you’ve self-appointed to monitor the correctness of others reactions and measured them against your “correct” standards.
“I wonder what that says about her. She seems to attract the overenthusiastic.”
Don’t worry about Cyndi, she’s fine. Worry about what your post says about yourself.
Andy
@Tommy:You’re lucky then that your taste in dance music harmonizes better with Cyndi’s dance projects than mine. While I do own and love certain types of dance music, Cyn’s efforts in that genre have never appealed to me – but that’s a matter of personal taste.
She tends to go for the strict 4/4 rhythms combined with a rather industrial or sterile sound (at least to my ears), while I like warmer, more organic forms of House and Drum ‘n’ Bass with smoother vocals or no vocals at all.
But I still love her early albums – particularly the album with her band Blue Angel. I think that album really captures her glory as a vocalist best. She kind of lost me in the nineties. It seemed like she lost direction and tried all kinds of things and just couldn’t continue to stay in a genre that really worked well for her voice – Rock ‘n’ Roll,Soul and Brill Building Pop.
I think the problem with “At Last” and also the new Blues album is that her voice is too much in front of everything else. She has a voice that needs to be evened out a bit in the production, like it was on “She’s So Unusual” and “True Colors”. When her vocal tracks are too heavy in the mix she can be pretty earsplitting. But I might give the new album a try.
Thanks for your point of view, Tommy. I enjoyed the conversation.

@truthteller: And your post says just as much about you as my post says about me. I was talking about an experience I had with some of her fans – and it turns out you fit into that category pretty well.
So you write down some lyrics of hers as if they were lines from the Bible in order to prove to me what a great artist she is (-sorry, you probably require capitals for that word in order to do your holly mater dolorosa justice, so I say it again: ARTIST).
How old are you, -15?
I know these songs, I’ve been a longtime fan of hers – you don’t need to educate me. ( For that matter: I really like “Who Let In The Rain”, I fail to see the genius in “Madonna Whore” though.)
You can’t force people to see the same amount of brilliance in Cyndi Lauper’s work as you do.
I said that I loved her when I was a kid and that’s true, so I certainly understand your devotion – and I never said she has no talent. I do appreciate her talent, she just doesn’t always match my taste and I have the same right to join a discussion to express my opinions as you have.
So once I dared to review an album of hers (“Brink”) on Amazon and dozens of guys like you were rating my 3-star review as unhelpful and insulting me in comments, saying things like “Go away. You are a hater. Your are a MADONNA fan!” How pathetic is that? I removed my review then and the experience certainly left an impression.
I was probably already a fan of hers before you were even born. But people grow up and their taste in music changes and artists you loved might move into different directions.
And you do seem like a bitchy queen to me. Bless you ,- Andy

I love Cyndi. She is the best. I met her once and she was so sweet and funny.
