Dan Savage hits back at Rick Santorum in an email sent to Mother Jones. Santorum had previously said he was “praying for” Savage, who “obviously has some serious issues.”

It gets better is just a bullshit PR campaign, nothing more. Telling kids both GLBT and hetero to put up with bullying until they leave school is not constructive advice. It’s cruel. School boards, school administrators, teachers, etc, need to have zero tolerance policy for bullying. It’s not uncommon for teachers to bully unpopular kids themselves. That’s where the changes need to be made… The reason “It Gets Better” caught on with politicians and celebrities is because it’s great PR and it requires absolutely NOTHING from them in the way of real action.

As a “defense” for Santorum, it is possible (but not likely) that he confuses pornography with a “stimulus package”, which the Republicans oppose because it reminds them of socialism. But maybe it is likely: Santorum doesn’t impress me as the brightest “candle” in the room.
On the other hand, Santorum is doing a great job of destroying Romney – to get the nomination and try to get elected, Romney has to use Nixon’s strategy: run go the right for the primaries and then run to the center for the election. The problem is that Santorum is putting “right” so far right of “center” that Romney will “hit the wall” as he tries to run back – running aerobically won’t be fast enough and running anaerobically has some hard limits.
Obama will have a really funny possibility for an attack ad: just show Romney saying X in the primary and ~X after the primaries, and then show a guy flipping pancakes. You don’t even have to say anything about Romney to disparage him.

It has a very empowering message, just because a couple (to many) have killed them selves after making a IGB video dose not mean ti is a bad or ineffective campaign. It just means that some people who are being strong and putting on a strong front to the world, also tend to be the people that need the most help. Some of the strongest people out there are people who are depressed, and quite offten then present a very strong front to the world, when things finally start to go off the tracks means that they have been trying so hard they can’t try any harder.
The bigger problem is that there is a total and utter lack of understanding of mental health in this country and what sort of signs to be on the look out for/be alarmed by seeing in those close to you. Just look at the number in even the gay community that attack victims of suicide as being weak, etc. It is a systematic problem in this country, depression which is a mental health issue (whether it is or is not caused by outside forces) yet unlike physical health issues it is treated like a weakness of the suffer for having it.

Savage has made some great arguments on our behalf on national television.
But he’s also a dingbat, which is typical of a media pundit, and he’s made serious mistakes.
IGB was invented by someone else. He just ran with it, and did not make sure that the message was that kids should stay closeted in school unless it’s absolutely, positively safe. It was totally irresponsible of Savage not to warn people.
Likewise, this frothy stunt was disgusting, immature, and a huge strategic mistake. So of course Santorum is going to exploit it to demonize us again. Savage should have removed the site eons ago. But he was egged on by the thoughtless crowd, who often speak loudest in our community.

@Dave: Perhaps you should actually check out the It Gets Better site, check out a few of the videos — I have yet to see a single video that says “put up with bullying.” Every video posted by a bullied gay kid tells their story of how they persevered and overcame bullying, offering up strategies that worked for them.
Like/dislike Dan Savage, that is your prerogative. But don’t judge the program and its participants without doing even a little research about what IGB is all about.
