Despite the right's battle to stay gay marriage in California, Stephen Weir – who heads the state's Association of Clerks and Election Officials – says same-sex couples may be able to stay tying the knot as soon as June 14th in some areas. [AP]

Sadly, those same couples will probably suffer the same heartbreaking fate as those who married in San Francisco. When a society permits fundamental civil rights and the legality of emotional relationships to be decided by plebisite, the result is rarely a pleasant one for the oppressed.
When did we get to vote on the legality of straight marriage? Or whether or not to permit divorce, the breaking of such a fundamental and holy institution? Or on whether or not black children should be permitted to attend school with whites?
The vile efforts of Arizona-based christian fundies to frighten voters and ram through a Constitutional amendment in California should be opposed through all means possible. And the amendment should be vigorously opposed: if this amendment passes, in a more or less progressive state like California, GLBTs might as well just sit down and shut up about marriage.
