“Deplorable.”

More racist grossness, kids: “University of Kentucky police are investigating who hung an effigy of Democrat Sen. Barack Obama from a tree on the Lexington campus Wednesday morning. UK President Lee Todd, after a press conference Wednesday, said that UK police have notified federal authorities of the incident… UK police took down the effigy and have it as evidence, Todd said. He called the act “deplorable” and says that type of behavior is not tolerated on UK’s campus.” [Pol Watchers]

Why are people so shocked that racism is still engrained into American culture? I know tons of people who are very politically correct where they need to be proper and doing the “right” thing and then when the event is over…they spew all their pent up racial slurs that they apparently were holding in the whole night. But it’s okay since no one hears it, right?

It hasn’t even been fifty years that blacks earned their rights in this country. And after that, another minority replaced them in the public and the disdain for black Americans was just covered with a nice plastic covering so that the couches wouldn’t get grease on them.

I would love to live somewhere where people didn’t act like this. But we ALL must face it. Some of us are gay, others are black, Indian, Mexican, Jews….blah blah blah. We get it. We are all hateful mofo’s when we don’t get what we want or others get into our business. Just look at the heat that Prop 8 is causing in CA.

Well said. Regardless of who wins, I hope this raises the awareness of the bigotry that is alive and well in this country.

And, how is this more deplorable than the d-wad in West Hollywood who has an effigy of Sarah Palin hanging in his front yard?

Yet Queerty remains silent about the two queens in WEHO who put out a noose with governor Palin.

Sexism and Ageism is cool with Queerty!

It’s not the first time in this campaign that this has happened. It happened a few months ago at George Fox University in Newberg, OR. This is just nuts…

Umm, didn’t noticed Ajax comment.

And spare us the bullshit racial/historical context psy. What the hell! Do you think sexism was somehow invented or surged after racial discrimination!?

It’s the same bullshit argument black Gays love to make when they defend black homophobes and anti-Gay incidents perpetrated by blacks. As if somehow some of the world’s most brutal crimes against Gay people have not been committed by people of African descent in the African continent.

The we have been more oppressed than you argument is not only false but the point you creep want to arrive at by using such a distortion and lie is immoral.

No. I’m saying women were not historically hung from trees, because they were women, nor were old people hung from trees because they were old. Black people (and quite a lot of black people in the south) _were_ hung from trees simply because they were black.

In no way am I saying either form of speech should be restricted. I’m a civil libertarian.

Also, you change the subject. We’re talking about racism against blacks here, not homophobia. Had they burned Barney Frank in effigy* you might have an argument.

*ever wonder where the word “faggot” came from?

“No. I’m saying women were not historically hung from trees, because they were women”

No! They have just been raped mercilessly, been prostituted against their will, enslaved, made to remain silent and considered the property of men.
But feh, blacks have suffered more.

Hate is hate, and all groups have been subjected to the same brutality and discrimination all throughout this great nation and throughout the world…..and since some people love to claim this is a nation made up of immigrants and all types of groups, all hateful acts should be measured with the same stick. Otherwise you cross into a hypocrisy and biased territory.

All I’m saying is that palin was hung from a tree, she wasn’t portrayed in the kitchen or in a playboy bunny outfit or some other demeaning female steriotype. In that respect, it’s fair to assume that the person who made that (admittedly tasteless) display just plain didn’t like that _particular_ woman, and didn’t hold anything against women in general (mccain was also in the chimney, btw).

On the other hand, you have a portrayal of Obama hanging from a tree. In addition to the dislike of the candidate portrayed, there is a clear allusion to the lynching of blacks. It’s fair to assume that the person who made the Obama portrayal held a great deal of resentment towards black folks as a whole.

I’m not saying that one act is any less hateful than the other, but that one is more _racist_ than another (that’s debatable, if you consider hatred of an entire race “more” than a single person).

That being said, both displays, on private property, should be allowed, in my opinion. What is offensive to one person is humorous or even insightful to another. It’s not up to you, me, or anybody else (definitely not the govt.) to decide.

Completely agree. There’s nothing more un-American than censorship. That’s not the case when similar Obama displays have come up in private properties though and that’s wrong. If we are gonna have to follow some PC rules then they should be followed by everyone even a Gay couple in WEHO.

This line coming from Church-lady, who luvs to race bait, is sort of funny. Too bad she doesn’t practice her own words.

And please, o please, spare us your sob story how your folks paid for Emmet Till’s funeral or were comrades with John Brown.

ps: how are you and Men-sur getting along? Well I hope!

Then the ACLU would probably take such a case (as they have done in the past with white supremacists, as well as everybody else), provided there was no violation of municipal codes in the display (unlikely considering the elaborate nature of so many haloween displays).

You don’t have anything against the ACLU do you?

My only beef is with bullshit hypocrisy.

If you’re gonna prosecute someone for putting an effigy of Barack Husein Obama on a noose then you also need to prosecute someone for putting an effigy of Sarah Louise Heath Palin.

OMG, I can’t believe I’m arguing from the same side as Churchilly! I must have a lie down.

Psy, I am well aware of the historical context of, as it was once called, strange fruit. However, hanging is a cruel, painful death and hate is hate – regardless of historical context.

Please put this in a historical context for me: What good can come of the display in WeHo?

“What good can come of the display in WeHo?”

Did I defend it? No. I simply said that one display was targeted towards a group of people and not just a particular candidate. After you asked:

“And, how is this _more deplorable than_ the d-wad in West Hollywood who has an effigy of Sarah Palin hanging in his front yard?”

I ask you. Which do you find more deplorable:

A. hatred (debatable, as intent is not clear) of a single person.

OR

B: Hatred of a single person (quite likely based on race) _as well as_ an entire race of people.

Psy, are you really trying to draw distinctions in qualities of hate? Are you out of your mind? What is deplorable about BOTH these acts is the perps feel they can display their hatred with impunity – the fact that they KNOW others will sopport their hatred.

I’ve been hated as an individual AND I’ve been hated as part of a group. They suck equally.

Only one is earned. There is your distinction. Equally deplorable? I disagree. At least when a person hates you for as who you are, you know they have at least come to that conclusion, rather than having an opinion before getting ot know you.

I agree with PSY. No is saying hanging Palin is not distasteful, but it probably is not motivated out of hate for women.

Any noose of any candidate is deplorable and the one of Governor Sarah Palin was taken down by the request of neighbors. After the inauguration, these familiar signs of racial hatred becomes a threat against (President-Elect) Obama!
