Glee‘s high-voiced actor Chris Colfer was, at one point, publicly out. Then he went back in the closet, or at least shut the door most of the way. But on last night’s Chelsea Lately, the foul-mouthed chat host called him out on the obvious.
Whatever Colfer’s reasons for playing a ridiculous guessing game in the press, Chelsea Handler put that to an end. Not in a mean way, but as a matter of fact way: “Your character is gay, and we know you’re gay. … Don’t be shy about that.” Colfer said “Yes.”
And this is why we like Ms. Handler.
But it’s not like Colfer is naive: “Prior to coming out, that I was as straight as every other actor in Hollywood.” L-oh-fucking-L.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.

YOU GO GIRL!

I watched it last night. I felt like she empowered him to do so. I think it was good for him, the show, and very positive for anyone gay in tv-land. My hope is that the show (Glee) continues to do well and that more shows bring more out characters on board. Now, if we could only get Chelsea to replace Conan.

I have to say he is very entertaining.
Cam
LOVE that, and LOVE how he called out all those other closet cases! Good for him!
Charles
At 19 he’s already more courageous than Sean Hayes and Michael Urie. Good for him.
Sean
He seems like such a funny, down-to-earth kid to hang out with. Hopefully the fame machine won’t change him.

Terrible of her to force him to come out on television. She backed him into a corner he didn’t want to be in and I don’t respect that.
Greg Theron
Haha he came back to his Clovis High School. I live in Fresno, I hate it here.

Chealsea rockss!!

@ #9 CyD, he’s already come out. its been common knowledge for a while. its just after he did come out he hushed up about it, probably at the behest of his handlers.
Watching the interview its clear he doesnt care. he veryc omfortably said ‘yes yes yes’ when she said gay.
so nyeh
🙂
Jacob

I LOVE Glee. At first I thought Chris’ character Kurt would be an annoying stereotype, but they really developed his character (and many other annoying stereotypes like the blonde cheerleader and artsy overachiever) and made him deep, funny, and smart. Glee is a show that doesn’t take itself seriously while trying to be serious and it works amazingly well.
Lazycrockett
Wait? Michael Urie ISNT out? He was on NPR a couple weeks ago talking bout being an out man in hollywood and such?.
schlukitz
Chris might have a high-pitched voice, but he is cute as all get out and handles himself nicely.
belgium
Um. Your quote is fucked up. So it didn’t make sense.
David
The After Elton ladies must be losing their shit because she asked about his sexuality.
Marcus
I thought so too, David. So far, so good. They were quick to to think that, “she was dragging to poor boy out.” They love to think everyone is being OUTED.

Valkyrie! hahahahahahahah….

Chris Colfer is, what, 19 years old? That’s too young to have this much pressure. He’s a kid, for goodness sake! Some people are getting way too nosy. At this age, people are still figuring their life out; they’re figuring themselves out. Why should Chris be any different? I’m a little dissapointed with the way some people have been acting. Laughing at this interview? Asking questions that aren’t any of their business? I’m not pointing anybody out, or saying anyone is bad…I just wonder how the poor kid is dealing with all of the media, and questions, and stress. Could we cut him some slack? Picture yourself in his shoes. Just try.
EM
Yeah, I kinda agree with the above comment. But he is quite unique and he’s going to be asked about his sexuality, whether he is or isn’t like his character. I hope it doesn’t get to him, he seems really nice and sweet. I think he’s one of the most beutiful creatures I’ve ever clapped eyes on tbh.

Sometimes I wonder what Chelsea Handler’s motivation is when outing people all the time. Some gay people do love seeing others being outed publicly feeling that they are being vindicated somehow but sometimes they do not question the reason behind the person who does it. Chelsea Handler does have a gay past herself but keeps reminding the audience she is not gay. So if she is such a freedom fighter on the gay cause, why does she have such a problem if someone questions her? I think she outs other people to keep others people pointing at her, pure and simple. I don’t think she’s being that honest about it.
fguyuftu
That was awful of her. He didn’t want to be stereotyped as a gay actor. And there’s nothing wrong with people staying in the closet anyway. There’s a lot of homophobes in the world and if I were homosexual I have to admit I would not be brave enough to come out. Not that there’s anything wrong with it but tons of people think their is, and more people think it’s kind of to be laughed at. Chelsea, listen to Kurt!! “I don’t believe in denying who you are, but I don’t believe in outing either”
