Last night we watched Los Angeles gay Chip Pope, who we met last week, attempt to make it through Last Comic Standing‘s semi-finals! Did he do it? (Spoilers ahead.)
No, no he did not. Unhappy face here. Even though his coming out story was hilarious (Hands, please: Who can relate?), there were straighter funnier persons, the judges decided. But the gays aren’t out of this yet. We’ve still got Fortune Feimster competing next week, and she loves bringing up being a lesbian.

This is effin bullshit. They cut several comics that I thought were funnier. Chip being one of them. I wish they didn’t have to narrow it down so much. Some of my favorites didn’t make it: Lil Rel, Jason Weems, Chip Pope, Alycia Cooper, + Shane Mauss. Ugh

I saw Chip a while back on “The Smoking Gun’s World’s Dumbest…” on truTV. I wonder if he was always out of the closet professionally, or if he has only recently come out.

Ohwow, I wouldn’t have known who this guy was if I hadnt been watching episodes of the very short-lived MTV series Austin Stories back from the 90s. Chip was one of the 3 main characters on the show and played it believingly straight.

Sometimes these kinds of shows tend to go more for how “relatable” a comic is than how “funny” they are. You need to play close to the “edge” but not step over it.
I think Chip has only been out for a short time. He’s been doing stand up for a long time and at least in his sets I heard a few years ago he didnt have any gay material.
His timing by the way is impeccable. Makes me jealous !
