Meet the Utah GOP’s pick to secure the state senate seat that represents Salt Lake City: Melvin Nimer, owner of a tax consultancy the openly gay president of the Utah Log Cabin Republicans, who’s jumping in the race after party officials had to do away with Nancie Lee Davis, who failed to file financial disclosure forms in time.
Nimer faces off against incumbent Sen. Ben McAdams, “who is considered a straight ally of the LGBT community,” and has the endorsement of Equality Utah thanks to his work with Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker to pass anti-discrimination ordinates. Funny story: They’ll both be competing to sit in the seat once held by Sen. Scott McCoy, a gay dude.

Progress I suppose.

The senate district in question covers the most liberal section of Salt Lake City, the Avenues, which tends to votes heavily Democrat. A very sneaky and strategic move for the Republicans and possibly a win-win situation for SLC GLBT residents. The dichotomy of SLC is very strange. It is one of the nation’s most liberal cities within one of the most conservative states. It is to Utah what San Francisco is to California.

@Brad: Accept that California is not a theocracy.

This senate district in The Avenues of SLC hasn’t elected a Republican in decades. SLC itself hasn’t elected a Republican mayor since 1971, either, for that matter.

To answer your question, yes. But then again, you’d known that had you read your own article.
