Queerty is better as a member
The direct correlation between homophobia and misogyny and lack of intelligence continues, like the pro-life lunatics who proclaim “stop aborshuns not assult rifles”.
If you want to send a homophobic message, at least be clear on what the message is!
Honestly I would prefer folks to be this plain spoken however distasteful. No one was physically injured and Sarah & Lindsey can share their experience with anyone who will listen so that the business can be avoided. Education is not a priority for everyone across the land. However misguided that may be, mocking someone’s lack of education and most likely opportunity only compounds the resentment. The world would be an extremely boring place if we all shared the same POV. That bakery’s mgmt chooses to be homophobic, avoid it and share that information. @ the end of the day who are these people to Sarah & Lindsey other than hateful bakers not likely to earn profits from gays and lesbians? Lead by example! Living well and looking good doing it is arguably the best revenge for nearly anything.
They shouldn’t have eaten the cake, honestly I wouldn’t trust anything baked by that person.
I would suggest that the Dept. of Health be called regularly to report unclean conditions at the offending bakery. Sooner or later the general public will be wary of anything they sell, thus closing the place permanently. Disgusting business persons!
What is the deal with cake decorators? They seem to be some of the most anti-gay people around. If I ever have a wedding, I’m going to order pie.
Lindsey is a gender neutral name, how the hell they know it was for Lesbians?
Merv, well said! Everyone who went to work today had to leave their opinions about controversial subjects at home and use the professional mouth that goes with their professional clothes. When we’re home again, we get to change into our casual clothes and be more casual with our speech. For example, if I called a student’s parents and gave my unvarnished opinions about him or her, I might be out of a job. The baker doesn’t get to give the customer an opinion on their cake. That’s not what is being sold. Wait until after work and visit with a friend over a beer about it like everyone else!
So the Advocate article gives some important information that helps makes sense of the story. Apparently Sarah chose a cake design that comes with balloons drawn out of icing on the top. She asked for the design without the balloons. Hence, “no ballons [sic]”. It seems to me that the no balloons request was written on the top of the cake instead of the happy anniversary message. I also bet that the person who took the order wrote lesbian anniversary in their notes and that ended up on the top too.
Of course, that being said, I can’t imagine why on earth, if it was a genuine mistake, the manager wouldn’t apologize too. I wonder if there was a language barrier in play . Or, maybe the place is just mind-numbingly homophobic.
I don’t think that I would have eaten it, you never know what they could have put in it.
Yeah, if they were willing to write a homophobic message in plain view on the cake, God knows what they put in the cake. Probably should’ve avoided eating it. Blech.
We will outlive all these ass-wipes. That’s the best revenge.
@littledicksboreme: I can tell by your name you’re a real classy individual. I’m just glad those in the Civil Rights movement didn’t have your attitude, and thankfully our brothers and sisters on the front lines of the Gay Rights movement don’t, either..
” I also bet that the person who took the order wrote lesbian anniversary in their notes and that ended up on the top too.”
Outside of their being homophobic, they would need to do this why?
What @littledicksboreme: you say about avoiding this business I agree on. Problem is, does anyone have the name of the business other than the couple? I’d like to pass along the word to friends & family in that area.
To quote the great Louis Virtel: “You can always predict what antigay protesters will say. But never how they’ll spell it.”
“littledicksboreme”. That name though!!
I think if a person pays for a service then that contract should be honored… This trend of messages on receipts and cakes and botched orders to make an anti-gay statement is a childish attempt to assert dominance… A twisted form of protest… It only proves that we are getting to these idiots… It is not unlike previous civil rights movements… We may be unable to avoid taking it on the chin once in a while, just keep moving forward and be strong I guess.
I would NEVER get something like a cake without consulting the “Pink Pages”! Especially if I lived out the sticks, in a homophobic-until-proven-otherwise area like the former Confederacy. (I wouldn’t even try it in New Hampshire or Maine, frankly.)
@Merv: Yeah – seems like there is a homophobic cake-decorator story nearly every week. You’d think they would go into a more “butch” profession, like florist??? I don’t get it.
“A bakery”? Which bakery, exactly? Just so the rest of us will know better than to ever go there.
Hey Queerty, don’t tick us off with a story like this, and then fail to tell us who the Nazis are that did this!
Sounds like a new boycott case, really dude this is
2013, please get a friggin grip.
I wouldn’t accepted anything from this bakery
and let him eat that leftover cake.
Can someone find the name of the bakery? I live in Arlington and have the week off…
I agree with everyone wanting the Bakery identified. I also live near Arlington VA and would like to make sure I don’t shop here and perhaps even stop in and tell the manager why I won’t. This is unacceptable behavior that the business decided to engage in and then refused to apologize for and protecting the business doesn’t serve our community well.
@littledicksboreme: Yes I can imagine how this cake will now look on Yelp or Angies list.
home schooled christian bigot. funny how those words always go together……
There can’t be that many bakers in Arlington VIrginia. I’ve got some extra time to web search. Too bad I’m not in the area though, a little rock action to glass may be in need. Yes, I believe violence is the answer sometimes, so don’t waste your time posting “We should be better than them” bull crap. People that say that have generally never been beaten up, thrown down a flight of stairs, had objects like pointy scissors thrown at them….etc
If it were me, that cake would be on the manager’s face (or at least accidentally dropped on the floor). Not really for the message, but for the sloppy work. Do you think I pay people for sloppy work? No, I do not.
I live in Arlington and certainly would appreciate the name of this bakery. Will SOMEONE PLEASE provide this name? Thanks
I think it is very ignorant of that person at the bakery to be so mean and spoil what was to be a happy occasion. If the name of the bakery is ever revealed, people should stand outside with pickets signs saying “Homophobic Bakery”.
I think the gay community should launch a boycott of this bakery. Let them lose business and fire that old bat.
407 Bakeries listed in Arlington VA. no mention of the name that I can find. As yet, still looking.
The bakery employees are most likely Teaparty Cuccinelli voters.
Not very wise of them to eat the cake. No telling what was in it.
They are lucky it wasn’t me, I would never eat that cake, I would have pretended to trip and have that cake go all over their store
That is a great idea, hit them in the pocket, that ALWAYS hurts
Lindsey can be a man’s name- the Senator from SC for instance- the person who did this isn’t just a homophobe, but a name a phobe…. What’s the name of this bakery- we need to order 10 cakes each and not pay!
@mlbumiller: How did they know it was a couple and not a mother and daughter?
Small town crap I guess.
Also, not all-same sex female couples are lesbians – but that’s another conversation.
I want the Bakers Name & Address I wont spend my GAY$ MONEY at a bigot’s business.
I think constant health monitoring is a good idea. People who aren’t smart enough to NOT alienate a whole group of people, they aren’t smart enough to run a SANITARY complex operation which requires uncooked food to remain in warm area, this attracts vermin and pests. Proper sanitary storage of food storage is probably beyond the narrow minds that operate this store!
@Bellamy: @jaack: No one has the name. I have read every story online even sent an email to the Advocate… As yet the name of this place is not known…
I’m gonna be in the minority here and say, not sure if I buy this “story.”
Something just seems fishy. ( No pun intended). So she comes to an online news source like the Advocate, which other GLBT news outlets pickup, which in turn could translate into thousands of people knowing the address and identity of the establishment. Thus not allowing them to discriminate against the next GLBT person And she and the Advocate does not release a name or address of the business??. No wonder she did not want her last name given out. Anyone can take a picture of a sloppy self made cake and email it in to an online newssource and cry wolf. You guys are some smart people. But you should have caught on and known something was up when her supposed partner decided to eat the cake anyway. Really?? Come on peeps, who in their right mind would do that after beliving to be a victim of discrimination. I don’t want someones spit in my cake. Or worse. Did you see the “Help”…
@littledicksboreme: I totally agree, and this is one of the reasons I am against non-discrimination legislation. All these laws have ever done is make people hate you behind your back instead of to your face. If anyone wants to argue that they work then please go research the number of black men hired in accordance with Affirmative Action.
@pauleky: Where exactly did that movement go again? If you believe that blacks are treated equally in 2013, almost 50 years later, you need to take off the blinders and do some research. You do not legally remove stupidity, you educate against it. Forcing equallity only causes people to take their beliefs underground… it does not remove them, and they still act on them; they just do it more selectively to keep it hidden.
They did not say Ballons.
That’s even worse
I agree its another fraud, just like the NJ waitress and her homophobic credit card receipt. If the cake wasn’t what you want, then just walk out of the store. Queerty loves to create silly unnecessary drama and disguise it as real news. One of my favorites, and still is, was when some woman had a wig snatched off her head and flushed down the toilet in a gay bar by some mean nasty queen, just like ‘valley of the dolls’. It was entertaining, but complete BS.
Judge Judy always says if it doesn’t ring true, it probably isn’t.
@Dixie Rect : LOL at the wig story…
@the other Greg:
” I would NEVER get something like a cake without consulting the “Pink Pages”! Especially if I lived out the sticks, in a homophobic-until-proven-otherwise area like the former Confederacy. (I wouldn’t even try it in New Hampshire or Maine, frankly.)”
Pretty good advice.
@Tackle: Okay, learn to spell.beliving ???@Dixie Rect: Talking trash about Queerty? Where else can you say what you want??? This site is awesome. Maybe they jump the gun but everyone does that. Personally I love this place, I bet you do as well, if not, then WHY are you here.
@AuntieChrist: Thank you for that spelling lession. But it. “always” amazes me when people want to play spell police on a blog site, espically when they lack themselves. But since you feel the need to help me with my spelling, (thanks) I will help you with proper grammatical syntax. No need to put that period, or comma after the word spell.
And the sentence where you corrected me should have “But” before learn. Thus properly reading,
” Ok, but learn to spell believing”. In correcting someones spelling always use the correct spelling. Got that?
@Tackle: Thanks honey. I know my grammar and syntax is not up to par…. My last English class was 35 years ago so thanks for the info…At my age one has trouble with ones dangling participles. Have a nice day :-)
@AuntieChrist: Bravo, AC! Lest “Tackle” is not aware, “I” am the Spell Check/Grammar Police on this site. From what I’ve read, you do exceedingly well on this site and all others. Bravo, I say!
@tdx3fan: Keeping it hidden, over time, lessens its existence. It cuts down on spreading it. In the meantime, it also means for the most part being able to conduct normal business without worrying over what people think.
