While Philip is, as you can tell from his YouTube page, in on the joke, he highlights a very real problem: We are hearing Gay Inc. is now lobbying NASA to plant a giant rainbow flag on the moon when astronauts return there in 2010 — which would have been something to worry about if the plan wasn’t about to be killed. I understand Terrwill, but knowing YouTube, where the word “faggot” is the most common term in use (and not in an endearing way either), I guess I’m just not convinced that a lot of viewers will understand the sledgehammer subtlety of his iconic humor.
Perhaps, that is just me.
Sometimes, though, I think that I’m losing my “gayness” and I’m becoming one of the “grims”. It’s sort of like the old saying: Beware ye who battle with dragons lest ye become a dragon yourself.

Still, I suppose it’s true. Just like in the world after 911 when we started off fighting terrorists, and then, in many people’s eyes, we became terrorists ourselves to some third world countries.
But, getting back to the vid, I suppose this Monty Python approach has it’s place in drawing attention to the downright silliness of these cretins. But…as long as the message is not lost in the performance, that is.

Obviously, offensive slurs are just meant to reduce people to soul-less and meaningless caricatures. I too have found myself having to resist using the slur “breeder” when lashing out against homophobes. But, two wrongs do not make a right…nor does it make it easier to secure our rights.
Still, people have the right to focus their anger at injustice –wherever it occurs, but not the right to do harm to entire classes of people. So, I try to keep it civil (at least not personalize it too much). I sometimes even succeed.

But you’re right, the “N” word is degrading — no matter who uses it. Just like the “Q” word is in all of it’s incarnations.
The only exception would be in literature, theater, art — if it serves the purpose of creating realism and supporting a theme; such as, in both of the above cases. But not gratuitously, like for what often passes for music nowadays. Still, I don’t have the right to censor anyone, I can only just hope that people’s common sense will serve that function. People know instinctively when something is authentic or when it is just exploited for its shock value.

This lot just did a Bay Area hate tour. In the South Bay, they stopped at Gunn High School in Palo Alto (there have been a lot of student suicides lately and they just had to be there to rub salt in the wound) and then Stanford (to protest Hillel).

As often is the case, QUEERTY needs a better editor – NASA has/had no plans to return to the moon in 2010 (someone at QUEERTY probably hit the wrong key).
I thought Philip was hilarious, but then I took it as a parody of the Phelps morons – he joined in, pretended to be one of them, and made them look even more ridiculous than they already are – not easy to do.

I actually thought this was pretty clever. I’ve been involved in an anti-phelps protest before when they protested a soldier’s funeral in Galesburg Illinois. I’m glad we handled that the way we did, but making the group look even more ridiculous than they are is a good approach too.

Humor’s about context so it’s really hard to toe the line between performing parody and just being offensive. I never use the N word, because my parents were PC before PC was supposed to be the norm, and I’m still not a huge fan of Queer or Dyke, but I’m aware those words have lost some of their punch. My foreign grandma used to use the word “Negress” but she has been sent the obligatory moral outrage citation and we believe she has changed her ways!
