THE SCREENING ROOM

DVD: American Reunion, Big Bang Theory, Duran Duran Live, And More!

If there’s a theme to this week’s home entertainment offerings, it would be “Whatever Happened to…?” The American Pie crew reconvenes for more raunchy antics in American Reunion, 1980s pop survivors Duran Duran perform their greatest hits in the concert film Duran Duran: A Diamond in the Mind, the real-life mystery behind a gay man who went missing is probed in the documentary Gone: The Disappearance of Aeryn Gillern, and even HBO’s Game of Thrones takes a look back at Season One with a surprising re-release. All that and the first two seasons of Big Bang Theory—from back when Jim Parson was still in the closet. It’s a veritable walk down memory lane!

American Reunion
($29.98 DVD, $34.98 Blu-ray; Universal Home Video)

A high-school reunion (and a studio eager to cash in) is the impetus for bringing Jim, Michelle, Oz, Stifler and the rest of the gang together. Now adults with careers—and in some cases spouses and kids—the characters still manage to squeeze more raunchy humor out of the fading franchise. And this time, there’s an even higher queer quotient, with full-on gay characters, a full-frontal from Jason Biggs and a cameo by Neil Patrick Harris. And, of course, Jennifer Coolidge as Stifler’s MILFy mom.

Gone: The Disappearance of Aeryn Gillern
($24.99 DVD, Breaking Glass Pictures)

In 2007, 34-year-old Gillern visited a gay sauna in Vienna. When he failed to show up at work for the next two days, his concerned employers at the United Nations contacted Gillern’s mother, Kathy. A 20-year veteran of a New York police department, Kathy flew to Vienna and pursued the case herself. What ensued was right out of Kafka, with conflicting police reports, false leads and rampant homophobia. Gretchen and John Morning’s gripping documentary follows Kathy’s search and reveals a darker, less favorable side of a European city known for its progressive attitudes.

Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season
($59.99 DVD, $79.98 Blu-ray; HBO)

Why, yes, we did feature Game of Thrones: Season One’s box set back in March. But this new “The Sky Is Falling”  edition replaces that original pressing, because one episode featured a scene with a decapitated head  modeled after George W. Bush.

If you own that original version, well, consider it a collector’s item.

The Big Bang Theory: Season One and Two
($29.98 DVD, $39.99 Blu-ray; Warner Home Video)

The first two seasons of this geeky sitcom series about four physicist pals—including out Emmy winner Jim Parsons—get the Blu-ray treatment. While both DVD and Blu-ray editions boast behind-the-scenes extras, the latter offers an exclusive gag reel.
