THE SCREENING ROOM

DVD: “Snow White And The Huntsman,” “Absolutely Fabulous,” “Titanic 3D,” And More!

This week in home entertainment is minimally gay, but abundantly fabulous: A trio of new AbFab episodes are collected in Absolutely Fabulous: 20th Anniversary Specials. Charlize Theron earns a place in the evil queen hall of fame with the DVD release of Snow White and The Huntsman. James Cameron’s blockbuster Titanic gets an awe-inspiring high-def 3D treatment. And incest proves not-so-best in the ’80s Italian import, The Dark Side of Love.

Snow White and The Huntsman
($34.98 Blu-ray, $29.98 DVD, Universal)

Sorry Julia Roberts, but you done starred in the wrong Snow White movie:  Charlize Theron rules the screen as the narcissistic, evil queen in this latest storybook-to-movie adaptation. Putting aside the quandary of where that Hollywood trend even came from, SWATH sees huntsman Chris Hemsworth and seven dwarves (all played by awesome British actors you know) come to the aid of Kristen Stewart’s Bella, sorry, Snow White. Yeah, we know, we’d leave her to her own devices, too. The Blu-Ray includes a 131-minute extended cut, commentaries, and behind the scenes featurettes.

Titanic 3D
($44.99 3D Blu-ray, $39.99 Blu-Ray, $29.99 DVD, Paramount)

Owners of 3D televisions finally have a reason to justify their investment: Looking as if it had always been intended for the format—with a bright, stunning, detailed picture and plenty of visual “wow” moments that set a new standard—this is reason enough to revisit the iconic film from start to finish. You’ll cry again when Jack sinks into the depths. (Seriously, we did.). In addition to everything included in previous jam-packed DVD releases, the Blu-ray features new extras, including “Titanic: The Final Word With James Cameron.” Somehow we doubt that.

Absolutely Fabulous: 20th Anniversary Specials

($24.99 DVD, BBC Warner)

In January , our beloved Patsy and Edina returned in a trio of  hysterical installments—“Identity,” “Job,” and “Olympics.” The DVD release features all three uncut episodes with extras including Patsy and Edina’s appearance in a BBC special, “Sports Relief,” and accompanying behind-the-scenes special.

The Dark Side of Love

($24.99 DVD, One 7 Movies)

This 1985 Italian film tells the story of a businesswoman who tries in vain to dodge her hot brother’s incestuous advances. Girl, we’d have problems too if our sibling was that hot. Several queer characters round out the twisted plot.
