How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
($24.99 Blu-ray, $19.99 DVD; HBO)
Directed by Ryan Murphy, who finally got this made after decades of failed attempts by the likes of Barbra Streisand, HBO’s The Normal Heart brings Larry Kramer’s classic, emotionally devastating play about the 1980s’ AIDS crisis to cinematic life. Uncompromising in its depiction of AIDS’ ravages during the first wave, with awards-worthy turns from an all-star cast, this is truly a must-see. Includes a behind-the-scenes documentary, How To Start A War.
($24.99 DVD; Breaking Glass Pictures)
Gay Mexican filmmaker Julián Hernández has brought us poetic, sensuous works like A Thousand Clouds Of Peace. In his latest, a filmmaker — who sometimes shoots porn films — becomes obsessed with a dancer. Extras include a trio of bonus short films.
($39.99 Blu-ray, $29.99 DVD; Criterion Collection)
Legendary choreographer/director Bob Fosse — jazz hands, everybody! — shared his personal demons and a whole lot of razzle dazzle in this semi-autobiographical 1979 musical masterwork. Roy Scheider plays Fosse alter-ego Joe Gideon, a drink-drugs-and-sex prone workaholic balancing a new Broadway show and movie at the same time. Chock full of incredible Fosse choreography, while John Lithgow makes an appearance as a composite of Fosse’s Broadway rivals including a few real-life gay ones. Criterion’s amazing 4K restoration of this classic comes with extras including a commentary, interviews and conversations with key talent, vintage documentaries, a Fosse TV appearance and loads more.
