Those of you who can’t catch today’s Ellen, during which the lesbian funny lady grills Republican presidential hopeful John McCain on gay marriage, should dive into that there jump and watch the clip.
It’s perfect for that mid-morning slump…
Don't forget to share:
Help make sure LGBTQ+ stories are being told...
We can't rely on mainstream media to tell our stories. That's why we don't lock Queerty articles behind a paywall. Will you support our mission with a contribution today?
Nicely done, Ellen. I was honestly wasn’t expecting her to go as all-out on McCain as she did. She even managed to back him into a corner from which he could only repeat the very obvious fact that they both have differences and couldn’t justify his beliefs. Nice.
Don’t you just want to shoot those morons who call McEvil “Moderate” or “Independent.” These deniers of the GOP Gulag ring familiar to the justifications of the Third Reich. Gotta love the Ellen!
It’s not being “picky” to want to be treated as equal. By being denied having a “certain word” because that word is “sacred” makes us less human, less than capable, simply less equal. It’s more than the word…it’s the changing of a mindset
GO ELLEN!!
It wasn’t too long ago when interracial marriages were protested, etc. Now we look at those times as ignorant, cruel … I just hope we can someday look back on these times the same way. There’s no reason two people who love each other should not get married.
on another note…. i really hate it when ppl talk about marriage as if it’s all about a word. the word itself doesn’t matter. it’s the legal status that matters. and until the federal government recognizes our relationships on a par with str8 married couples, we just won’t get the zillion rights and responsibilities that go along with marriage–whether they end up calling it marriage or not.
and that’s also the problem with all three candidates when they try to take this third-way option of “contracts” or civil unions. the problem is that they don’t allow us to access those zillion rights and responsibilities that go with marriage. again, it’s not about the word. it’s the legal status. and no contract or civil union will give us that. either give us full marriage, or give us everything that goes with it besides the name. (which means, of course, getting rid of doma–state-issued civil unions or “contracts” that the federal govt doesn’t recognize won’t cut it.)
Don’t know if Jason #9 was a comment on my comment but whatever.
I was just asking IF gay couples got every single thing that goes with “marriage” including recognition across the board from all states and the Federal gov’t and laws and EVERYTHING that straight people get with marriage but it wasn’t called marriage, would we gay folks be satisfied or would we be bitter because we can’t call it marriage?
I certainly don’t disagree that all individuals and couples should be treated equally across the board no matter what the issue is.
“…because that word is “sacred†makes us less human…”
It’s the ‘sacred’ word that does it for me. By saying it’s a sacred ceremony and as such can only be between a man & woman they are thereby imposing their religion on me. Can you imagine the outcry if we tried to pass a law banning Christians from marrying? In fact there wouldn’t be an outcry, they’d just laugh. Their mindset is *that* small.
to #11 sacred means “devoted or dedicated to a deity or to some religious purpose” and the biggest argument it that the Bible states that being gay is wrong. Do you remember the Bible? Do you know even anything it says? Its the *very* reason our country was founded. The Bible sanctifies the marriage between a man and a woman. So firstly, you are dead wrong (and sound about 12 years old) and secondly, why would a same sex couple want to be married in a sacred ceremony under the same exact God that condemns their lifestyle? (but I guarantee He loves them just the same as you and me!) If not a religious ceremony, then a civil ceremony which is a ‘non religious ceremony’ is in otherwords..a CONTRACT.
#1-you got it all wrong. McCain could absolutely justify his beliefs but I think he wanted to get the conversation over with as quick as possible and not delve deeper into the subjects of politics and religion. No one wants to watch a show on that, especially a show that is normally funny and entertaining.
I would say McCain looks incredibly uncomfortable, but Ellen’s show tapes during the afternoon, doesn’t it? It was getting close to his naptime … perhaps he was just cranky?
OK, that was unfair of me.
But seriously, McCain. Are you always incapable of looking a lesbian in the eyes, or just when you’re trying to explain to her why you believe she and her partner aren’t entitled to the same legal rights and protections you are? Hmmmmmm?
I think that the government needs to get out of the business of marriage. Marriage is a sacred union, made sacred by the church. (I use the term “sacred” loosely, because we heteros have been violating the sanctity of marriage for as long as marriage has been around.) The very fact that the government issues marriage licenses is a violation of the separation of church and state. The government should issue civil union licenses for hetero and same-sex couples alike. And if you want to get “married”, you can enter into a separate contract with the church. There . . . problem solved.
Thanks for giving me a hearty laugh today. You are truly a believer.
Since you opened up this can of worms it’s only fair that you should eat them…
I have to say I agree with most of this statement you made “why would a same sex couple want to be married in a sacred ceremony under the same exact God that condemns their lifestyle?”
Except instead of saying “the same exact God that condemns their lifestyle” you should substitute
“bigoted narrow minded unforgiving people like me (meaning you) who condemn your lifestyle”.
And since you seem to know everything about the bible, do you know if god used a pencil or a pen when he wrote it?
Instead of keeping your nose stuck in that musty book of fables and myths you might want to crack open a real history book about reality and learn about the making of this country. If that is beyond your comprehension you could watch that HBO mini-series about John Adams instead.
@17 – Reversion.
Exactly.
But might I add to what you said: this country was founded on freedom (including freedom from religious persecution) and equality (except if you were a slave of course).
But there is something important about the word and not just the zillions of rights. Marriage the word is something that imparts the social and legal status of family to people who weren’t previously related. The rights alone won’t ever convey that simple, but overwhelming concept of family. That’s why ‘marriage’ matters.
Sally, you make the same assumptions that I was describing and you can’t even see it apparently. You obviously don’t think that any type of marriage other than religious has any significant meaning other than as a contract. And that’s fine if that’s what you think. That doesn’t make it true.
i love seeing mccain get so uncomfortable, but then they just go on to joke around with the the typical pleasant talk show chatter. what kind of message is that sending? you can disrespect my rights as a human being, but that’s ok, cause one second later we’re back to being buddies!
i also hope that if she has obama or clinton on the show, she brings up the marriage issue again since they’re just as homophobic as mccain when it comes to that and dont deserve a free pass.
i think one of the interesting things here is that the word “marriage” was used before Christ existed (i won’t go into whether he really did or didn’t). So, really the whole being married in a sacred ceremony under the God who condemns… that doesn’t really apply. It only applies in the CHRISTIAN world. There are other beliefs out there.
Yes… the Gay marriage debate always has me wanting to ask the people who don’t agree with it, if my marriage of 13 years, with a man (I am a woman) should have it’s legitimacy questioned because I am an atheist and my husband is agnostic. My mom insisted on a Church wedding… We didn’t care where it was done, we just wanted to get married. So, we were married in a church by a pastor… So, given that I don’t believe in God, and my husband doesn’t think the existence of God is even knowable, should my Church wedding be invalidated too? Doesn’t my religious beliefs threaten the sanctity of marriage as well?
I also wonder if the whole “marriage is between a man and a woman for reproduction purposes” argument deals another blow to the validity of my “marriage” since I am unable to conceive. (some Christian pieces of work have had the balls to point to my atheism as the cause of my fertility issues).
Anyway. I support marriage between anyone who mutually wants to make that kind of commitment to another human being. No matter what race, religion, gender or political orientation they happen to identify with.
When the same-sex marriage law was passed in Canada in 2005, the then Prime Minister of Canada, Paul Martin, put it well when he said:
“Some have counselled the government to extend to gays and lesbians the right to “civil union”. This would give same-sex couples many of the rights of a wedded couple, but their relationships would not legally be considered marriage. In other words, they would be equal, but not quite as equal as the rest of Canadians. …Put simply, we must always remember that “seperate but equal” is not equal”.
I says let’s all look forward to celebrating the day when we hear similar common-sense words of wisdom and logic so eloquently spoken about this subject by the President of our country. And let’s hope it happens sooner rather than later.
I’m glad that Ellen is finally getting a little bit more political. She is absolutely right in what she says during this clip. And McCain is a hypocrite if he’s going to say in one breath that he wishes Ellen “every happiness” and in the next that he opposes gay marriage. She should have called him on that.
Wonder what type of ceremony she’s going to have. Will it be a religious ceremony, from a Bible or Torah that’s been edited to make her
f e e l good.
By the way she and her partner are different from heterosexual couples, they can not reporduce by the laws of nature. If they choose to reporduce it will be through manipulation, much like her stance on same sex marriage.
Also, being black in not the same as being homosexual. If you put brain tissue of different colored people under a micro-scope you can not tell a difference. If you put brain tissue of a male and female under a micro-scope you can tell a difference. Homosexuals don’t have any concrete, scientific or substantial objective facts to back there f e e l i n g s.
Homosexuality is only based on emotion. As an African American Woman I take issue with someone likening my being, to that of a homosexual. I have science to back my existance. Homo’s have smoke and mirrors and emotions to back their existance.
Tranitz, you can also spare us your skewed view of the truth.
As for my “sentence structure”, I never claimed to have perfect grammar. I do, however, know how to spell simple words. There is a difference between casual typing for internet chat + plain idiocy.
I’m confused? That’s a funny accusation coming from the person who hypocritically talks about freedom + diverse expression after broadly insulting gays. Also, sweetheart, I don’t need to defend myself from you. I’m simply telling it like it is. Your tone was disrespectful. Your blatant misspelling of simple words was idiocy.
What’s more, you’re obviously grasping at straws.
Does this really need to go any further? I’m fairly bored.
The above “internet chat” is an excellent example of the narrow perspective of the homosexual community. They refer to the truth or the most complete version of the truth as a “skewed view”.
If anyone voices a fact based prespective that differs from the homosexual– perverted, manipulative and completely emotionally based “skewed” view”, they are personally attacked in order to deflect attention away from objective points.
I’m sorry Fredo777 my mispelling of a word/words hurts your feelings. I forgive you your complete lack of sentence structure and your miss-spelling. Your miss-spellings don’t hurt my feelings at all.
However, “telling it like it is” from your perverted version of reality is n o t
t e l l i n g t h e t r u t h.
Lastly, the only thing disrespectful about the above “chat” is Fredo 666’s stupid, narrow, emotionally charged attack on my fact based comments regarding Ellen’s upcomming marriage “ceremony”.
You need to get facts and hard science to back up your f e e l i n g s. Until then shut-up.
“Wonder what type of ceremony she’s going to have. Will it be a religious ceremony, from a Bible or Torah that’s been edited to make her
f e e l good.”
Edited as opposed to mis-translated & re-interpreted numerous times over the centuries?
“By the way she and her partner are different from heterosexual couples, they can not reporduce by the laws of nature.”
Well then I guess you don’t want people who are infertile to be able to marry either? Or will you make an exception for the straight people?
“Also, being black in not the same as being homosexual.”
Did someone say it was? I must have missed that bit.
“If you put brain tissue of different colored people under a micro-scope you can not tell a difference. If you put brain tissue of a male and female under a micro-scope you can tell a difference. Homosexuals don’t have any concrete, scientific or substantial objective facts to back there f e e l i n g s.”
Now we’re getting into the realm of fantasy.
“Homosexuality is only based on emotion.”
More nonsense.
“As an African American Woman I take issue with someone likening my being, to that of a homosexual.”
How sad for you.
“I have science to back my existance. Homo’s have smoke and mirrors and emotions to back their existance.”
I’d love to know exactly what ‘science’ backs your ‘existance’. Do you have peer reviewed papers that prove you exist or something?
Every morning you wake up, you can choose your sexual orientation.
Every morning black folks wake up, they h a v e n o c h o i c e i n t h e i r c o l o r.
I know you are blinded by emotion and love to confuse or pervert fact with trite jargon. But why don’t homosexuals celebrate their differences, instead of trying sooooo hard to be j u s t l i k e heterosexuals?
Where’s the hard science to back your…………f e e l i n g s…of that’s right i t d o e s n o t e x i s t
Much as I do not choose to kill, steal, rob or pretend as though something is what it is not, I also do not choose to be homosexual.
You people see things one way and I another.
Someone obviously has to take the high road here, and I’m exhausted by your non-factual nonesense.
So, how about something we can all agree to? So long as two consenting adults want to be with one another, it should be there business and there’s alone. Or do you have a problem with this as well? Never mind, don’t respond, you have enough on your plate just attempting to be you.

Isn’t this all just a matter of semantics or am I missing some sort of legal mumbo jumbo?
To me, pushing to use a certain word to describe a legally binding relationship between two people is just being picky.

Seriously, you should do stand-up comedy…

Just Dumb…I mean(JD)
Every morning you wake up, you can choose your sexual orientation.
Every morning black folks wake up, they h a v e n o c h o i c e i n t h e i r c o l o r.
I know you are blinded by emotion and love to confuse or pervert fact with trite jargon. But why don’t homosexuals celebrate their differences, instead of trying sooooo hard to be j u s t l i k e heterosexuals?
Where’s the hard science to back your…………f e e l i n g s…of that’s right i t d o e s n o t e x i s t

Before I go on… I know, I know, don’t feed the trolls…
But I can’t resist 😉
“Every morning you wake up, you can choose your sexual orientation.”
So why don’t you ‘celebrate your difference’ and choose to be gay for a while? I dare you 😛

JD,
Yes, freedom of choice finally no spin.
JD
Tranitz. Why can’t you just be nice? Why do you feel the need to say things like;
“Much as I do not choose to kill, steal, rob or pretend as though something is what it is not, I also do not choose to be homosexual.”
You are directly comparing us (and me) to murderers (‘kill’) and thieves (‘steal, rob’). Can you not see how that’s offensive?
I’m genuinely curious. Why do you feel the need to say things like that?
Prove you’re not just a troll by answering a direct question for once rather than wandering off with insults like that.
