Elton John Sings The Praises Of Pope Francis In “Vanity Fair”

o-VANITY-FAIR-PAPA-FRANCISCO-570Perhaps its a shared love of Prada footwear, but Pope Francis has found an admirer in Elton John. The 76-year-old leader of the Catholic Church appears on the cover of the Italian edition of Vanity Fair, which has named him “man of the year” (reminder: it’s the Italian edition — you know Graydon Carter would never let this happen on his watch).

Anyway, VF Italia asked five celebs to sound off on the 266th pope, who as Cardinal Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio urged the church should support civil unions as the “lesser of two evils.”

As the non-Catholic Sir Elton puts it, “Francis is a miracle of humility in an era of vanity.” Wait, is he talking about the pope or Princess Diana?

This seems a far cry from a few years ago when the out(rageous) entertainer called for all organized religions to be banned. Perhaps he hasn’t read about Pope Francis’ plans to reform the Vatican’s secretive “gay lobby.”

In the issue John also expressed his hope that the pope will “reach out to children, women, men who live with HIV and AIDS — often alone, and hidden away in silence.”
