A SHOCKING NEW STUDY says queers are facing "widespread harassment, bullying and discrimination" across Europe. That the European Union poured money into studying the targeting of GLBTs is a worthwhile cause; its results, however, are anything but surprising.
That discrimination occurs "in all areas of social life", from schools to the workplace to health care centres, the report by the EU's Fundamental Rights Agency said.
Agency Director Morten Kjaerum said it found gays and lesbians continue to face assault despite EU rules meant to guarantee equality.
"These are alarming signals in an EU that prides itself on its principles of equal treatment and non-discrimination," he said at the European Parliament.
The report said gay pride events were being obstructed in Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Poland and Romania. Meanwhile, politicians and religious leaders in Italy, Hungary, Malta, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic have also rejected calls to improve the rights of gays and lesbians.
Kjaerum said, "very few incidents" of assault, hate speech by public figures or verbal attacks are reported to police.
The report said homophobic abuse is usually carried out by young men in groups, but is also persistent at work, in school or when trying to get medical care. [Cape Times]

Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Poland and Romania are all the most religious of the EU. And I guess that the churches were the focal point for resistance against the communist regimes.
dunno what the fuck these countries were doing when they under the iron fist of the Soviets, apart that is, from picking up the vile homophobia of the USSR!
But it does seem like the 50 or so years they were under communist dictatorship they were in the deep freeze. Now they are slowly thawing out and becoming normal countries again.
Give 'em time and enough pressure from the EU. I mean a lot of the people are currently working in the Western countries of the EU and (hopefully) picking up more civilised values.
sad very sad
As time goes by and more people start to see KKKristianity for the fraud it is, there will be a net gain for us.
@Tallskin: Thank you for acknowledging Soviet homophobia. IIRC, homosexuality was illegal in the USSR from Stalin's regime until right before it fell.
It sickens me to see gays defend the idea of increasing the power of states that could easily turn around and increase that power at our expense.
