Some folks need publicist Howard Bragman to guide them out of the closet. Others need Rachel Maddow. And on at least one occasion, Diane Sawyer will do fine.
His name is Anthony Bustos, and last night on World News the active duty soldier from Texas came out, risking his career, livelihood, and future. Part of photographer Jeff Sheng’s portrait series on closeted soldiers, Bustos previously appeared publicly as a gay soldier only behind the shadows. He now says that even with just six months left on his contract, he cannot continue to serve when his own country discriminates against him.
Men and women like Bustos have been more scared of showing their faces than deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan. What world is that?

WTF!
Six months to go and he jeopardizes everything? Huh?

Kudos to straight Bob Woodruff for doing this piece! And where the heck was ABC gay in residence Jeffrey Kofman that he could not do a report like this!

ABC’s piece on gay and lesbian soldiers was terrific.
I will never forgive Bill Clinton for wimping out to the radical right, and signing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell into law.
17 years, and 13,500 soldiers later, soldiers must hide in the shadows or risk being summarily separated from military service for the crime of being gay.

@WTF!: So it’s his fault, right? Douchbag.

@WTF!: A discharge takes longer than six months I presume, Dan Choi came out March 2009. Perhaps he thinks he can advocate that way without actually losing benefits.
Bubba
He’s fugly.
