Ex-Idol Host Wants "Truth"

The American Idol machine appears to be falling apart as of late, and a new interview with Brian Dunkleman will likely not help matters.

Dunkleman, as you may recall, co-hosted the competition’s first season with Ryan Seacrest but stepped aside to allow Seacrest the chance to take over the world.

Dunk gave an interview on Adam Carolla’s radio show to talk about his time on Idol, where he said he “developed such self-hatred” for taking part in a show he claims was mean-spirited and targeted specific contestants in an effort to break them.

Not that I don't believe him, but if he hated Idol so much that first season, why did he host American Idol Rewind last year?

I have never bothered with any "reality" television. I have enough real reality. I agree with Dunkleman. This show is terrible and mean spirited. The idea that they allowed William Hung to make a fool of himself for as many weeks as they did because they thought he was funny and he gave them ratings appalled me. I had not intention of watching it before that and I have had less intention of watching it since. This is just another nail as far as I am concerned.

Omigosh. A reality show is mean spirited and uses contestants by not showing them to good advantage for dramatic purposes? I'm shocked, shocked!

I just never suspected. Simon Cowell seems like such a really swell guy and Paula Abdul seems like such a sweet, level-headed woman.

Yes, the show has really raised the American discourse on music and popular entertainment. Mr. Dunkleman should be ashamed that he is targeting a show that raised us from the swamp that was pre-Idol reality television.

If it wasn't for Heroes, Pushing Daisies, Brothers and Sisters, Desperate Housewives and Boston Legal I would have no reason to turn on the television set…except now I have cable, and the Battlestar Galactica that came with it.
