Ex-Sen. Alan Simpson Attacks Homophobes Like Rick Santorum For Plaguing GOP

The above clip is noteworthy because 1) it comes from a cable news network; 2) it features somebody who’s operated in D.C.’s halls of power; 3) it addresses gay issues; 4) it features a member of the GOP discussing other members of the GOP; 5) it actually criticizes people who are against homosexuals. The words come from former Sen. Alan Simpson, the Republican of Wyoming, who has some terse words for “homophobes” like Sen. Rick Santorum: “We have homophobes on our party. That’s disgusting to me. We’re all human beings. We’re all God’s children. Now if they’re going to get off on that stuff—Santorum has said some cruel things—cruel, cruel things—about homosexuals. Ask him about it; see if he attributes the cruelness of his remarks years ago. Foul. Now if that’s the kind of guys that are going to be on my ticket, you know, it makes you sort out hard what Reagan said, you know, ‘Stick with your folks.’ But, I’m not sticking with people who are homophobic, anti-women, moral values—while you’re diddling your secretary while you’re giving a speech on moral values? Come on, get off of it.” Brava. [via]

The problem is, nobody will listen to him unless they have a big loss, then maybe.

The only way they will listen to him is if the power that they feel they gain from being anti-gay goes away. This is all it’s about, power. Power over a vulnerable minority group. And using that power to further themselves and send the message they want to. The way that power goes away is the entire gay debate turning to our direction without question, and it becoming basically socially unacceptable to be homophobic. We aren’t there yet, we are getting there, which these bigots know and don’t like, which is why they are getting more aggressive. A lot of people are still extremely insecure about anything gay-related, which is why you see hate crimes. So, therefore, the anti-gay platform will continue as long as they see benefit.

Senator Pot Simpson, meet Senator Kettle Santorum.

Mr. Simpson, you voted for DOMA. Your own filthy bigotry stains your legacy and my country.

Until you renounce that bigotry, apologize for the harm you’ve done, and dedicate your life to helping the people you harmed with your bigotry, I could really give a shit about your opinions on the matter.

Until then, FOAD you disgusting old cretin.

Alan Simpson is amazing. I wish he were running for President. I’d vote for him in a New York minute. I’d vote for him over Democrats.
