Exercises In Pitching Relatively Attractive Gay Singers to Gay Websites

In case you ever thought it was the fault sex-obsessed websites like Queerty for marketing gay performers as sex objects, let us present to you how the rep of Billy Dortch, the LA-based gay singer-songwriter, pitched us on on LOGO’s “Best Video of 2009″ nominee: “Billy has some new modeling pics as well as some new music that he requested be exclusive your website readers.” Well, then, on with the substantive portion of Mr. Dotch’s career!

“Relatively attractive?” Relative to some of the waifs I’ve seen in the Morning Goods, he’s very attractive.

I’ll bet the write up wouldn’t have been so snarky had they provided 25 publicity shots to run up the page-views. Kid is much more that relatively attactive. He’s an adorable hottie.

Given the obstacles that GLBT talent faces in the industry: blatant discrimination, homophobia, etc., why shouldn’t glbt sites promote their own? No one else is doing so.

For example: There are a number of acclaimed actors in glbt indie films who have yet to land a mainstream agent or manager in LA or NYC although they have the looks, talent and dvd sales to merit such representation. Why?

If we are not proactive in supporting or own, who else will? In terms of the feauturing the hunk of the day, I would suggest that at least once a week you feature a cute gay guy (as opposed to some mindless straight model or physique model wannabe) and if you have trouble selecting candidates you can start with GayLifeNYC’s “Hottie of the Month” and also contact Jerry Mitchell for possible candidates. You can also have Daniel Villarreal contact me directly and I’ll be happy to provide a list of additional candidates.
      Best,
      Jeff

PS: Matt Maggiacomo, Pendro Andrade, the out cast members of the “Eating Out” franchise, Cameron Mitchell’s films and Caspar Andreas’s films, Guest House Films’ out talent pool, the partners of talent like NPH and Chad Allan, etc. That should keep you going for a while.

Do not under any circumstances fall for the segregation paradigm. It is a highly homophobic one that plays into the hands of the homophobes who currently control the music industry. They WANT us to be segregated. Segregation is a phony form of acceptance. Repeat, do not fall for it.

We need to be out there agitating and putting pressure on the MAINSTREAM record labels and MAINSTREAM media outlets to play the music of talented gay males in the MAINSTREAM. Although talent must come first, homosexuality shoulnd’t be used as an excuse to shut out talent.

It is beyond appalling that the music industry has been allowed to get away with male-specific homophobia for so long. Absolutely appalling. It’s time we rattled cages, grabbed scruffs of necks, and exposed and shamed the people who are currently controlling the music industry in America.

He looks great, way better than a year ago. I totally agree with Jeff R. We need to support gay people anywhere including the music industry.

It’s telling that his rep referenced the modeling pictures first in his publicity blurb … I don’t even need to hear this guy’s music to know he’s a pretty face first and a musician second thanks to his rep’s tactic …

I suggest that young people wear as few clothes as often as possible. Get every bit of attention and admiration you can.
Youth is sex and you only get a few years at it.

Show it off. Show it the FUCK off!
