Someone needs to tell Fantasia Barrino that the “some of my best friends are gay” defense went out with “not that there’s anything wrong with that.”
The American Idol contestant made headlines (for a change) recently with a bizarre Instagram post that complained the world was going mad, and cited marijuana legalization and gay marriage as proof.
After some understandably negative blowback, Barrino went back on Instagram to set the record straight—sort of. “My whole team is gay, my manager is gay,” she posted. “middle finger up to those who seak (sic) to destroy me. It won’t work.” She went on to say “I’ve been in to [sic] many gay clubs, sang at to many Prides,” to be homophobic.
You mean you danced to our music and took our money to perform? Wow, you’re practically a gay icon.

An hour later, Tasia posted an all-caps rant condemning bloggers for noticing comments she posted on a public forum for people to notice:

I read her original comments and I don’t think she was slamming gays/gay marriage. It seems to be a rant against people that were negative toward her, and she unfortunately didn’t make herself clear in her statement. This should not be a story, like her or not.

That was not her defense, what people fail to realize is that she (honestly) only became somewhat literate months ago. She could never be able to use the term “gay equality”. She explained her intent (as best she could) and the line “I don’t care who gets married…” etc was her attempt at saying she supports gay equality.
I accept her apology although I am not a fan, never bought any of her music and can’t name one song of hers.
Its nice to roast someone but I can only do so if I truly believe they meant harm and I don’t think she did, I know a lot of people know that too, but they just want to continue the roast

Just because you have gay people working for you, it doesn’t mean you are gay-friendly. In such cases, it’s often a business arrangement and that’s all. Rihanna is rumored to have gay people working for her but she has a reputation for being into homophobic dancehall singers who reportedly promote the killing of gays and lesbians in their lyrics. @Rockery: That’s precisely what her counterargument was: she works with gays, performs with and for them; therefore, any claims of homophobia are unwarranted.
Her original and similarly unlettered tweet is pretty clear: pot and gay marriage are examples of (1) things the Bible proscribes, (2) proof that the world has gone mad, and (3) extreme acts that, when juxtaposed with her acts, make hers seem less worthy of judgment.
I get that she’s not completely literate, but my interpretation is an eminently reasonable one that’s justified by the plain meaning of what she said and how she structured it. Read the original. I think you’re being too charitable.
