Fantasia Barrino: “My Whole Team Is Gay… Middle Finger Up To Those Who Seak (Sic) To Destroy Me”

fantasia
Someone needs to tell Fantasia Barrino that the “some of my best friends are gay” defense went out with “not that there’s anything wrong with that.”

The American Idol contestant made headlines (for a change) recently with a bizarre Instagram post that complained the world was going mad, and cited marijuana legalization and gay marriage as proof.

After some understandably negative blowback, Barrino went back on Instagram to set the record straight—sort of.  “My whole team is gay, my manager is gay,” she posted. “middle finger up to those who seak (sic) to destroy me. It won’t work.”  She went on to say “I’ve been in to [sic] many gay clubs, sang at to many Prides,” to be homophobic.

You mean you danced to our music and took our money to perform? Wow, you’re practically a gay icon.

An hour later, Tasia posted an all-caps rant condemning bloggers for noticing comments she posted on a public forum for people to notice:

Now im VERY UPSET!!!! BUT ITS COOL!! IM NOT THE SAME GIRL I USE TO BE. IVE BEEN HURT ENOUGH. IM A Grown Women thats been Hurt Enough now. FOOLISHNESS!!!! I APOLOGIZE TO ALL MY LOVES, ALLLL MY GAYS, QUEENS AND FAB FRIENDS WHO’S SEEING THIS NONSENSE RIGHT NOW. HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN THAT THEY HAVE TRASHED ME SINCE THE DAY I STEPPED ON THE IDOL STAGE? HAVEN’T YOU ALSO NOTICED THAT I STILL HAVE NOT STOPPED.

TO MY GAY MANAGER( IM OVER SEEING YOU WORK SO HARD) THOSE WHO NO ME NO I DONT JUDGE ANY 1 AND THAT I JUST WANT THEM TO STOP TRYING TO JUDGE ME.

TO ALL THE BLOGGERS AND NEWS STATIONS GOD BLESS YOU TOO!! CAUSE YOU NEVER SUPPORT MY GOOD YOU JUST REPORT THE BAD. I DONT CARE WHO GETS MARRIED OR WHO YOU LAY WITH, HANG WITH OR WANT TO BE LIKE. ITS YOUR LIFE LIVE IT. NOW GO AHEAD TAKE THIS AND TURN IT AROUND BUT IM STILL HERE CAUSE GOD PUT ME HERE.

CHECK MY SPELLING AND MY GRAMMER* whatever you need to do* This is sad and im done with all this Media stuff .

We’re curious: Is “bless you” code for “go screw yourself”?

Was that supposed to impress me, or make an impression on me.

The only item I can possibly take from this is she was clearly not blessed with an abundance of schooling.

Everything with her goes right back to talking about what a victim she is.

This is a dead broke single mother who got onto a TV show and ended up making a huge amount of money. Time to stop playing the victim here Fantasia.

I read her original comments and I don’t think she was slamming gays/gay marriage. It seems to be a rant against people that were negative toward her, and she unfortunately didn’t make herself clear in her statement. This should not be a story, like her or not.

Christ. Do she and I speak the same language? She makes Chaucer look like a cocktail menu: I can barely make heads or tails of this or her original post.

Rather than her marginally coherent “I have gay friends” defense, why didn’t she simply address the criticism head on and simply say she supports gay equality? The lady doth protest too much.

Damn – got moderated. Well, in any case, instead of her marginally coherent “I have gay friends” defense, why didn’t she simply say she supports gay equality if that’s the case?

      @jwrappaport:

That was not her defense, what people fail to realize is that she (honestly) only became somewhat literate months ago. She could never be able to use the term “gay equality”. She explained her intent (as best she could) and the line “I don’t care who gets married…” etc was her attempt at saying she supports gay equality.

I accept her apology although I am not a fan, never bought any of her music and can’t name one song of hers.

Its nice to roast someone but I can only do so if I truly believe they meant harm and I don’t think she did, I know a lot of people know that too, but they just want to continue the roast

      @SnakeyJ:

I read them, I just thought they were kinda douchy because she basically said…

“There’s gay marriage but people are judging ME?”

It came off like, oh, they let the gays get married but people still sometimes don’t agree with everything I do.

Incredibly stupid and self centered. Because as far as I know…it is legal for HER to get married as well.

Just because you have gay people working for you, it doesn’t mean you are gay-friendly. In such cases, it’s often a business arrangement and that’s all. Rihanna is rumored to have gay people working for her but she has a reputation for being into homophobic dancehall singers who reportedly promote the killing of gays and lesbians in their lyrics. Here she is on stage with one such act:

@Rockery: That’s precisely what her counterargument was: she works with gays, performs with and for them; therefore, any claims of homophobia are unwarranted.

Her original and similarly unlettered tweet is pretty clear: pot and gay marriage are examples of (1) things the Bible proscribes, (2) proof that the world has gone mad, and (3) extreme acts that, when juxtaposed with her acts, make hers seem less worthy of judgment.

I get that she’s not completely literate, but my interpretation is an eminently reasonable one that’s justified by the plain meaning of what she said and how she structured it. Read the original. I think you’re being too charitable.

Like everyone who can’t comprehend that a book written during the Iron Age – by a multitude of different authors, no less – isn’t the be all & end all of existence, Fantasia doesn’t see the glaring hypocrisy of judging others, yet getting angry when she is judged in return.

I think there is some ambiguity about what she is saying in the original statement. It’s not entirely clear.

But really, who cares? Fantasia isn’t exactly a household name anymore.

We should be boycotting Rihanna now. There is no excuse for performing with a man who still sings songs calling for death for all gay men.

Can you imagine if Elton John sang with a racist who calls for death for a particular racial group? His career would be ended.

Either way, this is a PR nightmare for her. Either she was homophobic, and for that she was slammed, or she was playing the victim card, and was unintelligent in her wording. Either way, a nightmare… Could she have been hunting fir a homophobic base in the African American community?

I think she really needs to sit back and edit what she posts, before blowing up, would give me credence to what she is saying and she wouldnt be “playing the victim” all the time.

this attitude of hers got her into trouble with a couple. she was texting the wife about the husband leaving and choosing fantasia

feel sad, she’s talented but her attitude is what we call “palengkera” or a wet market attendant that keeps on shouting without thinking what she said
