Before the Human Rights Campaign’s New York attack effort wastes too much money makes up too much ground, Tim Gill’s Fight Back New York has named its second target after Sen. Hiram Monseratte in its campaign to remove anti-LGBT lawmakers from office: Democratic Sen. Bill Stachowski, who’s spent his 30-year term keeping you down. If ever there was A Man to fight, Stachowski is The Man! Well, him and Sen. Ruben Diaz, the bigoted ringleader who votes against gender identity equality and the rights of his two supposedly gay brothers.
@FanOfThat: That’s a bunch of crap. The Diaz family are well-loved by voters in the Bronx (his son, who is pro-LGBT, is Bronx borough president) and it would take a HUGE amount of time, money and effort to unseat him, if it’s even possible. Any candidate who could win in that district would have to also be a Bronx person of color, so race isn’t really an issue. Chance of victory is.
If Fight Back can take down two, three or even four vulnerable anti-LGBT Senators for the same amount of money it would take to get rid of Diaz, that’s a much better strategy.

If there is one person who can get away with voting against same-sex marriage in the NY senate it’s Ruben Diaz. The guy is hugely popular in his district and gay rights happens to be the least concerns of his constituents.

In the NY Senate, we only need to flip one or two votes. It doesn’t matter which of the anti-gay senators gets replaced.
Diaz would be hard to beat. He has very strong polling in his district. You could throw a lot of money at a campaign, and still be unlikely to beat him.
It makes more sense to throw that money at a campaign to unseat a different senator, who might be easier to beat.
And, of course, the visibility of any campaign helps to move the public, even if the immediate political goal is not achieved. As the public moves, the politicians follow.

Diaz gets reelected with over 90% of the votes in his district, last I heard. Stachowski is way more vulnerable, equally a douche, and thus a better target.
