Films To Watch This Weekend Besides ‘Mission: Impossible III’

We are so totally over Tom Cruise, we almost forget he exists. Except when we open our eyes, and see him everywhere promoting Scientology and cackling manically at Diane Sawyer like he is going to boil her in a pot of stew. Fret not, there are other things to do this weekend besides see Mission: Impossible III, which we are going to avoid like the plague. Sorry, Kerri Russell and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, we adore you and we’ll catch you in your next films.

Might we suggest, instead of feeding the overpaid Hollywood machine, partaking in a film festival near you? Check the list below:

• Columbus, OH: Deep Focus Film Festival
Dear Ohio: Please clear your schedules for Saturday, May 6, or Sunday, May 7, so you may watch 20 Centimeters (pictured above). This film is brilliant, brilliant, brilliant:it’s the Spanish TransAmerica, more or less, except this film has hot sex and lots of male full-frontal nudity and drag performances more brilliant than anything you’ve seen. The movie lulls about 1/3 of the way through, but be patient–once it picks up steam, you don’t want it to end. This is the best gay film we’ve seen in years.

• Fresno, CA: Fresno Filmworks 2nd Annual Film Festival
“A Night At The Oscars” plays on Saturday, May 6 at 5 PM, showing 4 Oscar-nominated short documentaries. Very cool.

• Indianapolis, IN: Indianapolis International Film Festival
It’s almost over, but Kinky Boots is showing tonight…and there’s a party tomorrow…

• NYC: The Road to Damascus: Discovering Syrian Cinema
This one, well…supposedly it’s a good festival, but it may be a bit intense.

• NYC: Tribeca Film Festival
Gay hustler drama Boy Culture shows tonight! Go, go, go!

• San Francisco, CA: San Francisco Film Festival
This one’s almost over and the films seems a bit high-brow, but there’s a lot showing tonight. Smart people encouraged to attend.

• Santa Cruz, CA: Santa Cruz Film Festival
Fabulous! The Story Of Queer Cinema plays Saturday, May 6.

• Trenton, NJ: Trenton Film Festival
They are screening the original Shaft!!! People of New Jersey, you must go.

• Victoria, BC: Victoria Erotica Film Festival
Honestly, these films usually make us laugh more than they turn us on. But you never know. Feeling adventurous?
