Voting 73-30 on Friday to let churches hold prayer services for same-sex civil unions, the Synod of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church approved “blessing ceremonies” for The Gays, stopping short of letting anyone call these things marriages. “The decision accepts the human value of every person,” says Archbishop Kari Mäkinen, who was glad to see the measure pass. “No type of insulting or denigrating attitude toward homosexual people is acceptable. But at the same time, this keeps marriage as a union between a man and a woman.” (NB: In Finland, domestic partnerships have been legal since 2002, though Parliament is expected to take up gay marriage and adoption legislation next year.) But it was Wille Riekkinen, the bishop of Kuopio (pictured), who had the best commentary: “Let’s adjust our pacemakers, and show a bit of respect toward all people,” he says, shooting down conservative opposition to recognizing gay marriages because the Bible supposedly says so. “Or should we not eat our Christmas ham this year? It is one of the things that are prohibited in the Fifth Book of Genesis.”

Separate-but-equal. It’s the way we show our profound respect for people’s differences.

A step in the right direction, is still a step in the right direction. What seems a baby step to many in our community wanting full equality, felt like a giant leap to some of those in the church. Like teaching a child to walk. I think we should encourage the step and hope for more.
Christian Morons
Enough already. Christians are delusional. Like Bill Clinton said “religion is for weak people.” Christians have fucked us over for centuries with their stupid stories. They need to go out of business.

@Greg from Denver:
Their god Jesus gave them two commandments. Just TWO: 1. love god over all; 2. love your neighbor as yourself.
If they cannot bother follow their own two very basic religious tenets, I’m not going to congratulate them for not being utter barbarians, nor flatter them for their willingness to marginalize their brothers.
Until they can love others as themselves, they are FAILURES.
Fuck ’em.

I’m to that point, Crusty. If they don’t want to accept us as equal with an equal right to MARRIAGE, fuck ’em.
