Sounds like an interesting vacation. :)
You went to the wrong plantation for history. You should have gone to Laura.
OMG I want an entire wedding based off THIS!!
(That’s a joke, people. Relax. I happen to know the food is amazing.)
@Jackhoffsky: I hear they use a lot of butter.
A less grand plantation home, Evergreen Plantation, focuses more on the slaves and has original slave quarters. They highlight the lives of slaves but make it clear that Evergreen, relative to other plantations, treated their slaves less harshly. A lot of the family accounting records are on display at the visitors center when you can see a list of property including slaves.
Its interesting how you had to keep mentioning how she pointed with her “stub” over and over. If she had had a hand on that arm, you probably would have just said “she pointed” and left it at that. You also went to great pains to judge the tourist woman for being overweight as if that had anything to do with her character. Would she have been less oblivious to the plight of the slaves had she been thin and beautiful?
Interesting and enjoyable read. I wish it were longer.
I went on several historic house tours in Louisiana and they were all quite candid about the slave history. Agree with posters above who suggest this was an atypical, dud tour.
Also, we “Yankees” shouldn’t get too smug about all this, since the North had slavery too, just a little further back in time. New York State didn’t abolish slavery until 1827, less than 40 years before the war. And you can take a tour near Boston of the only remaining slave quarters in New England: http://www.royallhouse.org
I’m sorry, but you come off arrogant in this piece. You complain about the treatment of others while you make fun of people’s looks, make fun of the handicapped, and (gawd forbid!) a black man has a job in your presence? I do not know you, but you come off as a douche. I’m not saying you are, but your writing style backfired when it comes to judging others.
