Five Democratic representatives from telling it like it is: Don't Ask, Don't Tell ain't right. Via Servicemember's Legal Defense Network:

Five additional Members of the House of Representatives have signed on as co-sponsors of The Military Readiness Enhancement Act (H.R. 1246), a Congressional bill to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” ban on lesbian, gay and bisexual military personnel.

Representatives Al Green (D-TX), Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL), Ron Klein (D-FL), Patrick J. Murphy (D-PA) and Mike Thompson (D-CA) bring the total number of co-sponsors to 136.

Murphy's involvement may be the most compelling: the Pennsylvania politico served in Iraq and he once taught at West Point, the educational heart of our armed forces. Oh, and he's on the House Armed Services Committee, which will help things a bit.

As a onetime chaplain in the Canadian Armed Forces, the plight of gay and lesbian American patriots who serve their country in the closet is, like so many other like positions, an abomination.

True patriotism is when you serve a country honourably and in harm's way when the nation hates you and provides you with second tier rights as a civilian and more punitive acts under the UCMJ

It is encouraging to finally see Congress getting closer to overturning DADTDP. The dicks, figurative and literal, in control of the Pentagon will never do it on their own any more than they were willing to racially integrate the services. Ironically, one of the reasons we got ended up with DADTDP rather than Bill Clinton's proposed executive order opening the military to out gays was that then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Black Colin Powell threatened to resign and was virtually leading an open revolt against his Commander and Chief. We assume he stills believes being gay is a choice and still supports DADTDP unlike other generals who have since publicly denounced it.
