Former L Word Actress Blames Jesus Lovers for Prop 8

VIEWPOINTS — Join the chorus, Cybil Shepard! “The Mormons and Catholics” are to blame, the actress said at the recent L.A Gay & Lesbian Center’s “An Evening With Women” event. “Most of the money came from Utah, it’s very unfortunate.” And how’s President Obama doing for them gays? “”I think he is working hard at it, I really do. I am just so encouraged by Iowa and Vermont. We have a tough road ahead in California, but we’ll be hittin’ within a year.” [Fox News]

Mormons spent money here.. but it’s votes that won prop 8. I think we lost because we ran an anemic and polite campaign of our own. And because Barak stating his opposition to prop 8 was very quiet compared to his frequent and loud statements that he is opposed to gays getting married.

Don’t be fooled into that old line “Mormons are a small percentage of CA’s population.” That’s true, but Mormons from out of state bankrolled the “protect marriage” campaign, along with the Catholics and Evangelicals.

We lost because of several factors:

1. CA in particular was targeted and singled-out as a battleground state by the conservative Religious Right.

2. No on 8 ran a bad campaign.

3. Yes on 8 ran a good campaign and hit all of the media outlets, using fear-mongering and outright lies.

4. Yes on 8 skillfully used children in their ads and portrayed Gavin Newsom as an arrogant San Francisco liberal.

5. No on 8 never once put married gay and lesbian people in their ads.

6. No on 8 did not maximize the use of their grassroots supporters. I personally was turned away once from phonebanking because they didn’t “have time to train me on the new system” (despite having phonebanked 1 week prior.)

7. No on 8 did not organize any mass rallies prior to the election, nor did they reach out to the conservative inland areas.

8. Yes, the conservative religious groups are partly responsible for Prop 8′s victory, but the liberal religious groups should’ve and could’ve been more active. It is somewhat to their credit that they don’t tell their members how to vote like the Catholics, Mormons, and Evangelicals do, but standing by and doing nothing is not carrying out God’s work either.

What do you expect from a celebrity at the L.A Gay & Lesbian Center? Why would the L.A. Gay & Lesbian community center not have anything to say about this? I’ll tell you why because no one will hold them accountable for a response

Not only was it offensive to have to see her sexualized on the L Word, as if that didn’t make enough viewers want to throw up … now we have to be forced to endure the nimble ramblings of Cybil Shephard deliberately lying and refusing to take into account the role African Americans, Hispanics/Latino’s, Caucasians, Asian/Pan Asians, and Barack, played in it’s passing? Her self promoting Hollywood lies are not innocent and unharming. She is perpetuating misinformation.

It was Oama voters that were the deciding facter in the passing of Prop 8. Why doesn’t anyone confront these people when they say the self promoting propaganda lies to influence young people to believe this garbage they push on an already confused community?

Gavin Newsom IS an arrogant San Francisco liberal.

He insists he can read Hillary Clinton’s and Barack Obama’s mind and he goes on record saying even though they don’t support marriage, that HE knows better. HE KNOWS that they do. HE KNOWS SO MUCH. He was useless.

We lost because we didn’t react to the lies that the opposition put out in their commercials. We also lost because we didn’t do a good job explaining the difference between civil and religious marriage. They are two institutions that share the same name. To Review: (1) Civil marriage is performed by the government and is a business contract determining rights and responsibilities and financial conditions and requires others to acknowledge the existence of a relationship between people. This is all Prop 8 concerned itself with. (2) Religious marriage is a sacred rite and is a church responsibility. This religious sacrament, conferred by various religious denominations, whose exact nature, meaning, and theology differs from denomination to denomination. Prop 8 had nothing to do with this.
It is unfortunate that they have been called by the same name, and it is inexcusable for religious people to confuse the two deliberately!
Just think of it in this way. The government issues birth certificates, but the church does baptisms. Civil marriage and religious marriage should be as clear cut. Fight On!

I just find it refreshing that someone is finally blaming mormons and catholics, instead of the BLACKS.

As a fallen-away Catholic who doesn’t believe in the BS anymore, but who attends Mass occasionally with relatives, and who knows several Catholic families, I don’t think that the average, run-of-the-mill American Catholic is out there fighting gay marriage.

The big daddys in the church are fighting gay marriage, just like the big daddys are trying to keep Obama from speaking at Notre Dame, just like the big daddys say birth control is wrong. (There are no big mamas in the Catholic church.) The average American Catholic just ignores them. A lot of American Catholics stick with the church because of family heritage, culture, etc., but do not adhere to many church teachings.
