Foul.

Spanish soccer star Gennaro Gattuso does not approve of gay marriage: “In church marriage should be between a man and a woman, even if this is 2008 and everyone can do as they please… I’m someone who has believed in the institution of family since I was a small child and for someone who believes in their religion this (same-sex marriage) is very strange." Damn him.

Damn him + his swarthy, smoky, Orlando Bloom-in-Pirates-Of-The-Caribbean looks.

Psych. The above pic is kind of flattering, but the guy is kind of goofy-looking in the average photo.

Marriage in a church can still be between a man and a woman. We are talking about out of church and in the eyes of the government, and not your religion.

Hey, my family is from Calabria! I wonder if we're related… I don't know how he'd feel about having a big ol' mo as a relative but I'd probably not hesitate to tell him how I felt being related someone who thinks with no brains.

As Voltaire said centuries ago, "I disagree with what you say but I defend to the death your right to say it." I think Voltaire amde sense, and everyone here should respect Gennaro's beliefs.

If he doesn't want a same sex marriage, he doesn't have to get one. Conversely, I don't want his religion, so why does he feel the need to cram it down my throat via the power of the state.

My solution: He can practice his religion all he wants, nobody is forcing his church to marry ANYONE. He can politely refuse any same-sex proposals. So, it doesn't affect him in any way shape or form. And, if he truly want to live in a theocracy, I suggest he move to Iran.

RPCV — I don't understand why anyone should respect _anyone's_ irrational beliefs. Irrationality is the curse of the modern world, and should be discouraged.

Gattuso is indeed Italian - from Calabria, which is definitely far from the most advanced region of Italy. Although there are plenty of intelligent and cultured Calabrians, Gattuso is probably a lot more typical.

He's not a great player, and is really more noted for his antics - mostly bad sportsmanship - taunting opponents and even physical violence against truly great players, like Ibrahamovic. (Italian fans tend to lionize this kind of reprehensible behavior, as long as the offender is on their team.) On the other hand, after a victory he took off his pants and pranced around the field until the officials covered him up. (A habit we might wish more handsome Italian players would adopt.)

By the way, tomorrow Spain plays Italy in the quarters of the Euro Cup. If were solely a question concerning the difference between Spain and Italy in both cultural and political arenas, we should all definitely root for Spain. But who could root against Luca Toni - a very classy man and a great player from Emilia-Romagna!

Gattuso's actually world class. I strongly dislike him and his antics, but he's a really good soccer player.
