While homophobia is not rampant in Japan; gays are a dime a dozen on Japanese TV and most hip urban Japanese treat homosexuality as perfectly normal it is not nearly as open as the West. Homosexuality in Asia will progress along different lines than the West. I have been in a gay relationships with two Japanese men, both of whom are very interested in creating a domestic situation far faster than most American I have dated. Very sad indeed. I think the poliece may be trying to use this death to make a statement about homophobia in Korea. While homophobia is not rampant in Japan; gays are a dime a dozen on Japanese TV and most hip urban Japanese treat homosexuality as perfectly normal it is not nearly as open as the West. Homosexuality in Asia will progress along different lines than the West. I have been in a gay relationships with two Japanese men, both of whom are very interested in creating a domestic situation far faster than most American I have dated. I think in the CIA Factbook I read people answered 26% Christian, 24% Buddhist, 4% Other, and the rest (over 40%) said "none." But i have heard the "there are no gays in Korea" before, but that is a generational thing. And it can be heard in conservative countries around the world. I am not an expert on Korea, or on suicide, but I would guess there are other factors involved in these recent deaths. South Korea is incredibly homophobic, a lot of which probably stems from the egregious and widespread sexism that exists in South Korean society. I think this is somewhat odd considering Japan and S. Korea share so much popular culture and Japan is up there with Taiwan and Thailand as one of the most accepting countries when it comes to homosexuality. Of course, I'm fairly certain that Japan is no where near the level of acceptance that we have in western Europe and the so-called "Blue states" in the U.S. I don’t think there’s any conspiracy here, Key.
