Following a reported “argument with a friend,” former gay adult film performer Bo Dean (real name Michael) was shot in the chest last month in New Orleans and has subsequently become paralyzed from the waist down.
A GoFundMe campaign has been mounted by a woman named Melanie who writes Dean is her “dear friend, best friend… whom I love and cherish.”
Dean is still in recovery at the University Medical Center, where he was sent after the shooting on Nov. 28.
The bullet damaged his spinal cord, causing paralysis from the waist down.

According to the fundraising page, Dean does not have insurance and has no income.
He has “no way to pay the mounting medical bills and other related expenses (medicines, wheelchair, treatments, rehabilitation etc. etc.). This unfortunate incident happened right after we lost our home and was destroyed by a fire. We’ve lost pretty much everything and had to start from scratch,” the page reads.
Dean performed for a number of gay porn studios including CocksureMen, NextDoor, Raging Stallion, Men.com and Jake Cruise Hot House between 2009 and 2011.
As of this post, the page has raised $1,125 of the $50k goal.

If he is truly without income, whatever state he is in, given the severity of the injury, he will be covered by Medicaid. Additionally, if he was visiting New Orleans, but was a resident of California, for example, he’d actually be covered under California rules as that is his state of residence.

MacAdvisor Do not make assumptions based on information you do not know to be fact. Bo is NOT a resident of Louisana and therefore can NOT get Medicade. He also is NOT a California resident and has not been for sometime, therefore the same applies to MediCal. When you are in the process of transition and have not legally registered a new residence (gotten an id) within whatever state you move to, state funded insurance becomes tricky and nobody seems to have an answer. Also regaurdless of any of that mess an electric wheelchair will not be provided, only a manual one. For someone that has to sit in it the rest of their life that is a nightmare. I do not appreciate you discrediting this fund as it 100% is neccasary to get him through this. If you have never been at the mercy of a hospital without insurance please don’t comment about statefunded programs. The reality is healthcare for the uninsured in this country is a mess and even with Obamacare you are still treated as a second class citizen. If you don’t believe me the next time you require hospital assistance tell them you are uninsured and see the difference in your care.

@o.codone: At least your hospitl bills get paid. Here in Germany everyone has insurance. As retiree, without work or with any kind of disability the state will make sure that your insurance is paid. No one has to worry about loosing their existence. As Employee you have to pay 15% of your befor-tax income and you, your partner and the kids are insured. I never met anybody who prefer living without this security.
