NYC GOP Candidate’s “Gay-Friendly” Attack Flier Prompts Giuliani To Endorse Opponent

Juan Reyes, a Republican from Queens running for the New York State Senate, sent out a mass mailer attacking his opponent and fellow Republican, City Councilman Eric Ulrich, accusing him of being “gay-friendly” and “not a real conservative.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, Reyes’ campaign claims the flier was meant to bring to light Ulrich’s history of “flip-flopping,” stating that he ran for City Council as a conservative, but has a liberal voting record. Reyes also berates Ulrich for “hobnobbing” with Democrats, including an openly gay Council member, and hiring gay staffers.

Former mayor Rudy Giuliani, who is also a Republican and pro-gay rights, hadn’t endorsed either candidate as Reyes had worked in his administration, but he said the ad swayed him to back Ulrich.
