Women in my industry aren’t empowered. Never have been, never will be. Think about the modern man. The gene goes so deep, it goes right back to the caveman days: man must have control. Women should not change it, because we’ve tried and we’ve emasculated men. It’s dangerous to mess with science.
There’s a reason why men are here. If I was flying with a female pilot, for instance, I’d be very worried. Women have periods and hormones, and that bothers me about women who want men’s jobs. Like firefighters, police, soldiers . . . I don’t believe in women soldiers! Come on, women should be women. We should be feminine.
I’m not sad about it. We should accept it. It’s worked this way for a long time. Men went out and brought home the bacon. Women are now going a step too far, trying to be cleverer than men — or as clever. Now, the man becomes the house-husband and it’s wrong. It shouldn’t be that way.”
— Dame Shirley Bassey, 78, in a new interview with Daily Mail

Oh Shirley!!!!! WTF?!!!!! I have an aunt who feels the same way tho. She’s not as archaic but thinks the family breakdown really ramped up when women increased in the workforce. Most of the married couples in my family still think that the man is the provider and protector and the woman takes care of the home. Particularly the older couples believe this and it’s easier to understand because of the time they grew up in, as opposed to today’s generation where those traditional gender roles are less defined. Even as liberal as my mother is, I hear her make comments to my dad like “that’s a man’s job” when it comes to certain things. But Bassey’s comments are among the most rigid I’ve heard. For me, the fact that women give birth makes them the superior gender in my eyes. Take a stadium of seats, Shirley.

Since when does the LGBT community get to tell others what they can say or think? Ms. Bassy may be wrong, but so is QUEERLY and the community for berating her. She is a great talent and should be appreciated for her talents.

Older generations are fools.. those ideals are dying off,, thank goodness.
Sam Koester
It should probably read “Former Gay Icon…” then.

Shirley should know a thing or two and probably more about emasculating men. She’s the queen bee of it. Sad she tries to project her flaw onto women (throw under the bus) in an attempt to do damage control over her behavior.
Sure some men are insecure, threatened and put off by women. hell, the GOP membership is stacked with such men and fragile egos, but that’s hardly the woman’s fault.
aidanbh
I wonder if she is going to give up her independent music career and return to the kitchen.

She 100% has the right to feel that way, however she cannot expect me to live by her standards. I will live as strong, independent and empowered woman. If she feels the need to be subservient to men she can go for it, but don’t tell me that I have to live that way too.
Michael Estes
Apparently she’s gone off her rocker!

Bassey is an old, old broad from another generation. Views like hers are certainly not representative of the vast majority of people in 2015.

She sounds like an old fashion Woman, set in her ways. She is entitled to her opinion. Thank Goodness, she isn’t in the American Congress.

Shirley Bassey has been the breadwinner in her relationships, she also chose a career over motherhood- two things that in her time were considered very much against femininity. She was also raised by a single mother after her father went to prison.

Queertys so quick to trash people outside the community for being prejudiced but never calling or shaming the bigots inside the community doing the same thing to other people. I do think us gay people need to be reminded that we are not perfect and should be held accountable for the wrongs we do to other people too. Way too many gay people are expecting passes for things that wouldnt get if they were straight. All holding the victim card when it suits their interest especially white gay people.

Yes, those comments are archaic. I have no problem having my 250 lb self being rescued and carried down a fire truck ladder by a female firefighter, so long as she’s up to the task. There are women out there who are stronger than I am.

Naw, Shirley is the one who is living back in the day. Today in educated countries people are learning to be who they are, not who their religions are telling them to be.

I can’t get too worked up about someone her age holding on to a mindset that dominated her times. I’d be concerned if this statement came from a 30 yr old celebrity. Shirley’s not one who’d do well weilding a machine gun or flying a jet…but many women have proved her views are archaic and that she’s just flat wrong. Gold Fin-gaaaaa.
Masc Pride
Something for the perpetually outraged to complain about, I guess. I don’t see what’s so bad about her statements, particularly since she is an older woman. Even lots of women today like a man that “brings home the bacon” while they keep the home in order. I have a buddy who’s a stay-at-home dad/student. His wife is the provider right now, and the balance in their relationship is totally off. She doesn’t respect him much, and his finances (or lack thereof) are a major factor. Security is a big deal for women. So I kind of see what Shirley means on certain points. The idealistic politically correct thing to say isn’t always what works in reality.

Brian
Shirley Bassey is correct. The greatest mistake made by modern feminism was to push this idea that women must be like men. Inherent within this notion is the belief that being a woman is such a bad thing, it’s necessary to become more like a man. It’s modern feminists who are the true misogynists.
Gay-identifying men are technically misogynists owing to their rejection of the female body.
Linda Dublin

I have question, that I believe deserves an answer.
Why is it called, “Feminism”, when none the traits qualifications or concepts are feminine?
Shouldn’t it be called, “Masculinism”?

Her comments come from a different era in history and to some extent it’s still holds true . Take Latin culture many still believe women need to stay at home and the man works mostly South America/Mexico and middle eastern countries . US born Women are not having it . These are scary times we live in and We all deserve a voice even if the speakers comments are not agreeable to others . We all have the right to speak up good or bad

Singers and actors should just do their job and not talk. Being famous doesn’t make you smart.
Brian
Shirley Bassey is not saying that women should stay at home. She’s simply saying that women should know their limits, the limits which Mother Nature imposed on them.
Women who want to be like men are basically saying “being a woman is awful, so I want to be more like a man”. Where is the sense in that? It’s a form of self-loathing. It’s self-misogyny.
pscheck2
Right on, Shirley! This just not set too well with Liberal, PC and feminist thinking! In time, they will regret it, but it will be too late and the roles of the sexes will leave a void in their lives!

I’m giving her a pass on this series of comments, when she’s just expressing her opinion based on iffy, if not false truths. Rosie O’ Donnell can think the Twin Towers were bombed from within, and Katelyn Jenner can vote Republican if she wants. I don’t care, and if I stood to correct any and every stupid and irrational opinion that comes out of a celeb’s mouth, i’d be here for years…Go on, Ms. Bassey. Shirley Bassey is and was a quality, quality performer, a true diva. I love her song Hey Big Spender. She’s not one of these lip-synching bimbos that gay men seem to go for these days. I mean, Britney Spears??? Think about it, guys. Your tastes as gay men are in the drain if you think Britney is a talented diva.
As for what Shirley said, I agree with her. While the old feminists (of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s) were about equality, the modern feminists are about privileges. They want privileges for women.
Privileges for women mean that gay men suffer. Because when women gain privileges over men, it’s all men, and not just straight men. All men are put at a disadvantage.

Feminists don’t even like gay men! they are now claiming we are the ultimate miosgynists and we benefit from ‘patriarchy’ Basically we should all drop everthing, stop what we’re doing and what’s important to us – shut the fuck up and listen to the complaints and endless whining of women first and foremost. Good for DS for telling it like it is – love her even more now.

A female firefighter who was allowed to graduate the NYC Fire Academy despite failing physical tests has already gone out on medical leave — just 10 days into the job, The Post has learned.
Probationary firefighter Choeurlyne Doirin-Holder injured herself Monday while conducting a routine check of equipment at Queens’ Engine 308 in South Richmond Hill. Getting off the truck, Doirin-Holder missed a step and landed on her left foot, suffering a fracture, sources said.
It was her second shift after a transfer from Engine 301. In training for a hazmat assignment, officers found her struggling to perform the required tasks.
Firefighters called the tripping incident embarrassing — and alarming.
“If you’re going to get hurt in the firehouse checking a rig, what would happen at a fire?” an insider asked.
