Queerty is better as a member
Oh my lord – isn’t this exactly the sort of thing that gives us gays a bad reputation amongst conservatives? Doesn’t this just confirm their stereotype that we’re all sex-crazed and sex-obsessed?
And which conservatives are you talking about? Nothing short of your death well make a hater happy. As long as there are healthy people their going to look to get laid, http://www.standardmedia.co.ke/?articleID=2000063202&story_title=London-Olympians-lap-up-150,000-condoms .
And as much as I dislike the hookup culture in the gay community and even mourn the lack of just going out on a date, pandering to conservatives is pointless.
“…knowing who is gay on base or aboard ship can be nearly impossible,”
Really, they don’t issue “gaydar” in basic training anymore? :)
Don’t worry too much about “hook-up culture” in the military. It’s not like the typical gay neighborhood in civilian life. It’s true that young gay military guys will probably not be looking for marriage yet. (Oh the horror!) They may be out, now, but they’re still mostly rather inexperienced people sexually. More likely they’ll be looking for a compatible, regular sex buddy (or two), which is probably the best anyone could hope for at the average-sized military command anyway. And there’s nothing wrong with that, no matter what the prudes say.
Doesn’t this require there being an internet signal out at sea? Or does the base ship itself provide an wireless connection? If so, how will their superiors feel about the military hardware being used for what is euphemistically called a “social networking” app but will inevitably be used as a hook-up app?
And I hope to hell they’re not using their phones and texting while on actual duty. “Oh sorry, I missed that incoming missile, I was checking Facebook.”
@shumwae: So? Who cares what homophobes think? Besides, we could all become celibate saints, they’d still imagine we’re having bareback orgies with minors every day. It’s stupid to change our behavior because of some hateful morons’ idiocy.
Just when there was some evidence that Queerty was trying to grow beyond its gay
Beavis & Butthead reputation comes this simultanteously dishonest and juvenile rewrite of the facts in this story that offends me both as a member of the Board of OutMilitary [speaking solely for himself], as a gay man, and as a longtime activist against the military ban. No one’s doubting that the app will be used for sexual assignations as well as purely social ones; nor is there anything wrong with that. But your puerile need to reduce it to only the former reduces you to a mirror image of the Antigay Industry who refuse to see anything about our people except our sex lives. You can do better than that.
Yeah, this is really nasty. Almost as nasty as all the right-winger closet-queens hanging around on Grindr at CPAC (Conservative Political Action Committee). Just Google “cpac grindr” and be sure to watch the YouTube video.
How on earth is this allowed? Hooking up with a soldier of either sex is completely in violation of military law.
And WHICH “military law” would that be?
@Michael Bedwell: This is exactly my point.
@Freddie27: Maybe you’ve misunderstood the rule against “fraternizing”: officers aren’t supposed to date or hook up with enlisted personnel. Two enlisteds (or two officers), no such rule.
