Gay Nup Group Releases Television Ad Against Prop 8

Seizing on the campaign season fever, pro-gay marriage group No On Prop 8 today released its first television ad.

In this 30-second spot, the first in a family-centric series, a charming couple called The Thorons asking voters to vote against Proposition 8, a ballot measure intent on reversing California's gay marriage win.

Citing their lesbian daughter as inspiration, Mr. Thoron:

All we have ever wanted for our daughter is that she be treated with the same dignity and respect as her brothers — with the same freedoms and responsibilities as every other Californian. My wife and I never treated our children differently, we never loved them any differently and now the law doesn't treat them differently, either.

Mrs. Thoron concludes, "If Prop 8 passes, our gay daughter and thousands of our fellow Californians will lose the right to marry. Please don't eliminate that right, for anyone's family."

Note that the commercial uses the negative definition – "lose the right to marry" – which presents Proposition 8 as prohibitive. Supporters have previously admonished Attorney General Jerry Brown for using such language, rather than phrasing Proposition 8 as a protective measure. Well done, team!

What a wonderful couple. And the ad makes it so clear. Why should two siblings who come from the same family be treated any differently?

Prop 8 = bad business, bad politics and bad law. It's a sad day when rich Mormons from Utah can send in donations to change our constitution! NO ON 8!!! Keep California Free!

I agree! Those are true family values! Unfortunately, the religious right, who claim to be "pro-family," believe they are the ones to decide on the validity of a complete stranger's, intimate life. Where do they get this disgusting sense of entitlement?
