Wayne Besen wonders when – or if – we’ll get a gay president. “…It is not inconceivable that in 34 years – 2042 – a gay person could theoretically become president. It is likely that our Barack Obama is now in grade school. This gifted gay individual will be charismatic and able to appeal to mainstream Americans to win the greatest prize in politics.” It’s queer, then, that Besen entitled his piece “Where Is The Gay Jesse Jackson?” [FCNP]

I hate to disappoint Wayne but there is good historical information that we have already had out first gay President back in the 19th Century in the form of James Buchanan. The historical evidence is less impressive but there is also speculation that we have had at least 2 Bisexual Presidents (Abraham Lincolm and George W. Bush) as well as a lesbian first lady (Eleanor Roosevelt).
His question as to where is our Jesse Jackson is, however, still a good one.
