Meet Colton L. Buckley, a self-described “fiscally conservative, socially awesome” gay RNC delegate from Texas who doesn’t believe in gay marriage, hates Hillary Clinton and looks forward to meeting Jesus at the gates of Heaven so they can debate the merits of homosexuality.
Related: Five Reasons To Explain Mystery Of Why Peter Thiel Supports Donald Trump
Buckley shared his political philosophies yesterday with Slate in a video interview that is mildly offensive, slightly amusing and truly befuddling.
“I may be probably one of the most conservative gay Republicans here because I don’t believe in same-sex marriage,” Buckley says. “As a gay man, I don’t believe the government should be handing out marriage licenses.”
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Oh, but it gets better.
He also compares being a gay Republican to “being an African American in the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s and ’60s.”
“It’s a long haul,” be says, “and we’ll continue that march!”

And as for that darned GOP platform with all hateful homophobic rhetoric, Buckley’s not too concerned.
“I mean, there’s a slim, quarter-page of the platform that says, you know, ‘we don’t support same sex marriage, we don’t support these types of things, et cetera,'” he says, “but I would rather deal with a Republican who will say ‘I don’t necessarily agree with you’ than deal with someone who aligns himself with Hillary Clinton and the Democrats.”
But our favorite part of the interview has to be when he talks about the impending conversation he plans on having with Jesus H. Christ.
“Me being a gay man in the Republican party and me being a Baptist, that is between me and Jesus Christ,” he says, “and when I get to Heaven and get to those gates, he and I will have that conversation.”

Lets see. Here’s what you already knew about Colton before the very predictable interview..
1. Religious of coarse.
2. Still looking to be accepted by Mommy and Daddy. You just know the views are exactly the same.

WTF is wrong with people like him? I am amazed.
Terrycloth
Brainwashed ..definetly .wonder whathe would say if he could speak for himself .sad
darian
News flash all gay Republicans would, but hey they are gonna protect us from the scary brown people overseas so who cares if about a little discrimination.
Mack
He has no self-respect. He’s been brainwashed totally.
Hussain-TheCanadian
There are alot of contradictions here; if you are against the idea that gay men marrying, then thats fine, its your opinion. However we live in a world where government, in every single industrialized society, issues civil marriage licenses, and those licenses come with protection, so why would you want to deny yourself and others this protection?
Alistair Wiseman
He states that we wants to open up the Republican party and make it more accepting and welcoming of gays and lesbians. Shouldn’t we be encouraging people to work within the Republican party to make it more inclusive of gays and lesbians?
Those who disagree with him are putting their leftwing politics before gay and lesbian equality.
SportGuy
Pathetic excuse for a human.
martinbakman
Would like to hear him debate his GOP convention mates telling him he is a stink in the baby Jeebuz’ nostrils.
B Stallone
Go ahead and align with a party that hates you, yes hates you. What they say on paper or in news is not what they actually feel. You have not lived a long enough life to know the difference. Hope you someday catch up to reality. It does take time.
Alistair Wiseman
@B Stallone:
You don’t know what you are talking about.
I attended the inaugurations of President George W. Bush on January 20, 2001 and January 20, 2005. Those evenings, with my gay friends, we attended the Inauguration Ball(s) for both years.
Each year, I got up and danced with my gay best friend. Sometimes I danced at the Ball with some of my other gay, male friends. I’m not afraid of confrontation and was curious of the reactions, comments or even possible confrontations that may ensue with the other partygoers. What happened? Crickets. Not even a dirty look. One year, a straight man got up from the table in which his wife was sitting, and joined us. A few other straight men joined us and there was a group of straight men dancing with my gay best friend and I. We were a little surprised, but just kept on dancing while everybody was enjoying themselves.
Are all Republicans as embracing as these straight men were? No, but these hardcore Bush Republicans at a Presidential Inauguration Ball could not have cared less.
Hussain-TheCanadian
@Alistair Wiseman: Generally speaking you are correct, however how long have gay republicans been working under the Republican party to change things? The party seems to be edging right-ward for 20 years at least, and things aren’t changing.
Also, I don’t like the idea of marriage, however I wouldn’t associate myself with a party or a group that is actively trying to ban same-sex marriage. It’s a good option to have, and maybe one day, when I find my Prince, I’ll have a change of heart. It doesn’t make any sense why a gay person would work actively to remove rights from his own community, rather than reaffirm them.
Scribe38
@Alistair Wiseman: bullcrap they hate us! Bush ran on his hate for us. I will never forget getting robocalled after a great night with the husband only to hear I should vote for Bush to stop the radical homosexual agenda. At the same time the GOP fought against the repeal of sodomy laws. This party is always trying to screw us and not in the good way. That robocall made me a Democrat for life. I vote in every election, donate cash, and drive people to the poles to stop the GOP from making my life and those of other minorities worst. Add in that Trump is basically a Nazi and supported by the KKK and David Duke any gay supporting him his mentally damaged.

“Bush ran on hate for us.” Prove that President Bush ran on hate for us. Show me quotes, stump speeches, his writings, interviews, etc. on how he “ran on hate for us”. President Bush did not make your life “worst”.

It’s simple. His money is more important to him than his sexuality and he is probably always single, bitter about having no marriage prospects so wants to deny others the chance.
The End
@Alistair Wiseman: that sounds like an awful party.
You should of shared a deep passionate kiss with one whilst slow dancing in with all the other couples. Bet that reaction would of been quite different.
robho3
He’s from Texas — that kinda says it all.
Patrick Van Der Ven
Hmmmm, one very strange man.
Alistair Wiseman
@The End:
They were actually great parties attended by the new president and his wife.
There were not any slow dances that I recall and I certainly was not going to engage in a “deep passionate kiss” with my best friend.
rand503
@Alistair Wiseman: I too was at the inauguration of Georg W. Bush, both of them. I put on a T-shirt that says “Nobody Knows That I Am Gay.” I walked around outside.
Basically, anyone over 40 read my t-shirt, got embarrassed and looked away. Those under 40 kinda laughed or chuckled.
Now, I’m sure a lot of Republicans are gay friendly. But anecdotal evidence means nothing. We must look at stats, and those show that far more Democrats are supportive of gays than Republicans. The good news is that republicans at all levels are rising and getting close to half.
The bad news is that the Republican PARTY is 100% anti-gay. Nearly every single Republican congressman, senator, governor, state senator, clerk, and dog catcher votes against our rights. And THAT is what really matters, not whom you met at a party.
rand503
Just go to Gay Patriot Net, a website for Texans who HATE liberals of all kinds. These guys love the Republican party and insist that the GOP is better on gay rights than Democrats.
Even so, they have actually argued that they don’t want any rights — they don’t want the right to marry, they don’t want the right to be free of discrimination (because people have 1st amendment rights of free association), and they are against the repeal of DADT, because no serviceman should talk about his sexual orientation. They even said that if the right to marry comes from a democrat, they won’t recognize it because, well, liberals.
They are crazy bunch
Transiteer
Amazing. Just how stupid and clueless do you need to be to be a gay Republican?? I don’t know whether to feel sorry for this Loser, throw-up that we actually have people this stupid amongst us, shake my head that somebody actually believes in a Jesus Christ even though there is no evidence anywhere outside the Fictional Bible that he ever existed at all, or hates so much those that oppose those who believe in Fascism, gay or not. This guy needs a rubber room…
tardis
He’s a young guy. He’s probably still discovering who he is. I don’t want to say he’s brainwashed, but I imagine growing up in an environment like the one he did would do all types of things to a person.
The End
@Alistair Wiseman: didn’t realise it was November already. Must of really needed that sleep.
If you think that because no one so much as blinked an eye at two men dancing like how straight people all do when there are friends and drink involved makes the company you keep not anti gay you really do not know what being gay is.
Don’t kiss your best friend all you like, next time take someone who means more than that to you if you have one and do as i suggested. If you don’t then maybe youre like my earlier point and want to be with a party that will stop others having what you can’t.
SFHandyman
Someone needs to do some Street Epistemology with him and help him examine why he believes what he believes. He is just a baby gay and will hopefully come around. If he keeps an open mind it may happen, but his religious faith needs to be softened up or it will shut the door to change and growth.
Ukin
@Alistair Wiseman: Why aren’t you commenting here with your other user id as well? You usually fall all over yourself congratulating yourself on what a genus you think you are.

Even before I read the story I just knew religion would be a big part of it.
Dave Downunder
Judging by this guys internalised self hatred and the chaotic views he spouts trying to reconcile with himself I wouldn’t be surprised if that chat with jesus takes place a little sooner than later. This guy is going to implode.

@Alistair Wiseman: stated : Those who disagree with him are putting their leftwing politics before gay and lesbian equality.
==========
No, because he states that he doesn’t believe in same sex marriage. In other words, he supports the GOP because he is OPPOSED TO HIS OWN RIGHTS. Again, the fact that you lie and try to hide these facts show that your own self hate and hatred of “The Other Party” are all that matter to you. Not facts.
This guy is no different than if a woman said she supported a party that wanted to take away women’s rights to vote. He is just another 2nd class citizen doing his best to prove to bigots that he is a “Good Gay!” not like those OTHER gays who want rights.
Mo Bro
Maybe—just maybe—he cares more about the welfare of his country than he does the status of gay marriage.
It does happen, you know. Not all of us are obsessed with the gay agenda, as it’s a very insignificant part of our lives compared to the big picture.
The End
@Mo Bro: so his ‘rights’ can be bought
Kangol
@Mo Bro: “Gay agenda”? You know, you are as hom0phobic and self-loathing as the GOP anti-gay nuts you worship. Your use of that hateful term is a textbook example of how self-hatred can take root. Please get help.
Paco
The only gay rights the Log Cabin types want are acceptance through closets. They don’t want the bigots they admire and support to be turned off by their icky gay sex. They want us all in the closet and if any gay person gets bashed or killed, they will just shrug and say that person should have been deeper in the closet to not get noticed. That it was the gay persons fault for upsetting the bigot.
woodroad34
“Me being a gay man in the Republican party and me being a Baptist, that is between me and Jesus Christ,” he says, “and when I get to Heaven and get to those gates, he and I will have that conversation.”
Jesus replies, “Oh, I’m terribly sorry. There must have been a mistake. The ‘down’ elevator is to your right.”
plazaro1
This guy is really in need of psychiatric ward that will cater to his needs. He looks hurt, and broken. I read these stories and what comes to mind are the thousands of stories of germans who believed Hitler would solve all their problems and make Germany “Great Again” well, we know how that panned out.
mujerado
@Alistair Wiseman: – “Shouldn’t we be encouraging people to work within the Republican party to make it more inclusive of gays and lesbians?” The Log Cabin Republicans have been doing exactly that for four decades, and we see the result in the current party platform. How many times does someone try the same tactic hoping for a different outcome before it sinks in that it’ll never happen. Gay rights have come and, with continued struggle, will continue to come; but not in or with the help of the Republican party.
KerryB
@Stache: Mommy and Daddy are also likely brother and sister to spew out such a mentally deranged psycho.
Sansacro
I fully support diversity and the right of any gay, black, Latino man or woman to have any beliefs, conservative or liberal, Demo or Repub. That’s America. Personally, I think it’s great that gays and people of color are more visible the Repub party. We need more, especially people of color, to push back on the racism.
That said. I hope Trump looses badly. But worried about how an unsuccessful Hilary presidency might allow Cruz to sweep in like a foaming White Walker come 2020.
bookworm
Imagine that–a homophobic gay who resides in an extremely conservative State….
Alistair Wiseman
@mujerado:
Well, you don’t know our history very well.
It was the Log Cabin Republicans that were instrumental in overturning “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”.
Log Cabin Republicans v. United States was a federal lawsuit challenging “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”.
In September of 2010, a U.S. District Court ruled in favor of Log Cabin Republicans finding that “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” violates the First and Fifth Admendments of the United States Constitution.
stephen driscoll
Self abnegation is so very unbecoming. What a turd. The Logs claiming to be instrumental in anything is a joke. As Gertrude Stein once said, “there is no there there!”. They enable our oppressors. Logs: Impediments on the waterways of progress.
NateOcean
@ Alistair Wiseman, but…
“The legislative repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell rendered the case moot, and the decision of the lower court finding DADT unconstitutional is vacated.”
So the Log Cabin Republican still suck.
Berkleyguy
He is a total idiot. Does he think Donald Trump or Mike Pence will officiate at his next wedding(if he can find someone stupid enough to fall in love with him)? If he thinks that, he’s more of an idiot than Trump is.
dwes09
@Alistair Wiseman: “Those who disagree with him are putting their leftwing politics before gay and lesbian equality.”
Those who disagree with him are responding to the REALITY of the Right wing’s distaste for homosexuals and those they see as intrinsically immoral (and that means you as far as they are concerned). Those who disagree with this yahoo are simply relating to reality. Wanting to be a gay republican is truely not that far from wanting to be a black member of the klan. Gay and Lesbian equality is a stated goal of the left. it is anathema to the right and they state that, and attempt to legislate it constantly. It really is a puzzle what world you live in! It appears to exist only in your imagination.
dwes09
@Alistair Wiseman:
You really need to read and perhaps understand an article before linking to it. I recall you did the same thing a while ago. This article quite clearly makes the point that Bush’s actions were essentially empty rhetoric! to quote: “That sounds nice and all, but it’s kind words without kind content.”
His position was essentially “If the states want to allow civil unions, fine”. Given that civil unions have no teeth in court when a homophobic judge takes a surviving partner’s community property and awards it to an estranged family, rendering the partner homeless and without assets (as happened to a couple of friends of mine), it is a meaningless gesture (and more related to state’s rights than to compassion for LGBT folks). Chaney, despite being as evil as they come supported marriage equality, as he had genuine love for at least his immediate family (a gay daughter). He wanted to see real legal protection for his daughter and her partner. But Bush seemed more content paying lip service to the log in his eye than working to remove it.
woodin
Another self loathing guy. Lot of them among the closeted republicans. A good therapist could help him work thru his issues.
Dave084
Pathetic geeky little self-loathing twit. I’d bed he wants to suck Ted Cruz’s dick and have his baby. Genius boy said he doesn’t believe in gay marriage because the gubment has no business handing out marriage licenses…Newsflash you bow tie wearing bonehead, the gubment hands out hetero marriage licenses too so I guess they shouldn’t be getting married either.
More FYI for repugs who call themselves “fiscally conservative”. First off that’s an illusion. The republicans are certainly not fiscally conservative. They just spend shit-loads on the wrong people and destroy the economy to do so. Secondly, the Democrats can afford to be more generous with people who really need it because historical fact shows that the economy performs much better under Democratic administration. So we have more to give away on things that can really help people as well as doing silly things like building new roads, bridges and various other infrastructure projects that makes this a better place for everyone.
Dave084
@Berkleyguy: Oh but remember he doesn’t believe in gay marriage so I guess he’s not concerned about that. His grossly screwed up head must be a terrifying and lonely place to live.
GayEGO
Colton has obviously been brainwashed by his religion which is likely why he is a Republican who cannot think logically to separate church and state. Civil marriages require civil marriage licenses, not church doctrines. Colton does not understand that his fear is related to religion, not gay people.
Louis
This man reminds me of the equally narcissistic and ignorant Milo whom was recently banned from twitter.
So tired of these people they act like they are so superior yet they are a part of a party that never stops crapping on their rights and liberties and dignities as Americans.
AxelDC
If he supported gay rights and voted for the only viable option for gays, he would get no attention. Instead, he gets his headline on Queerty for being stupid. Congrats on your 2 minutes of fame! Meanwhile, the rest of us will have to save your marriage rights for when you wake up and realize that they mean to you.
AxelDC
@Louis: They are getting the one thing that they want out of life: attention.
Does Queerty run articles on the millions of gay Clinton supporters who are working hard to keep and expand our rights? Of course not. They focus on the freakshow of nutjobs attention seekers.
LucasH
So awkward. :S
