Gay Superhero Love Blossoms In DC Comics’ “Young Romance”

In February DC Comic is launching Young Romance: A New 52 Valentine’s Day Special, featuring amorous encounters between various superheroes, including gay couple Apollo and Midnighter. The 64-page anthology will feature work from some of comicdom’s top talents, including out artist Phil Jimenez (X-Men, Wonder Women).

Back in the 1950s and ’60s, romance comics were one of the most popular comic-book genres, with Young Romance leading the way in 1947. Spinoffs and knockoffs proliferated until the 1970s, with the original Young Romance series ending in 1975.

DC has incorporated a strong LGBT presence since relaunching its superhero line last year, including queer superheros Batwoman, Bunker, Green Lantern Alan Scott, and Starling, a bisexual member of the Birds of Prey.

Young Romance: A New 52 Valentine’s Day Special hits stores on February 6.
