Gays Have It Rough In India

Indian Dancers

Last week, Indian police posed as queers on a gay web site, leading to the arrests of four gay men. Their offense? As one of the many protestors who took to the streets after the arrests put it “I am a man. I love a man. That’s my only crime.”

Homosexuality in India is not just socially unacceptable but illegal (It can get you 10 years in the slammer!). That might help explain why, in a Juliet & Juliet love story, an Indian lesbian downed insecticide once her disapproving parents learned of her marriage to another woman.

We think what the citizens of India really need to help open their minds is a Bollywood version of Brokeback Mountain. We can see it now: Himalayanback Mountain.
