Another day, another change for Window Media: the gay publishing giant that just folded its weekly turned monthly, The Houston Voice. We hear from an anonymous and equally helpful source that they're mere steps away from naming a one William Kapfer publisher of monthly fag-rag, Genre.
It's been a few months since Genre's had a publisher on its masthead and there were murmurs of an imminent folding. It seems, however, that the higher ups have decided Vice President of Marketing Kapfer's got the chops to keep the monthly afloat. In a yet-to-be=released press release, Window Media's President Peter Polimino says:
Bill is a skilled leader with abundant energy who knows Genre well and will help us to build Genre into the country’s most successful lifestyle sourcebook for gay men. Bill has played a critical role in building on our success by driving ever-increasing levels of innovation and creativity into our marketing and cross-media advertising products.
Innovation? Success? Those are certainly two words we never thought would be associated with the magazine, but we suppose you have to stay optimistic at times like these.
And if anyone's hopeful, it's Kapfer himself. His unreleased statement reads:
I’m delighted to be joining the Genre team at such an exciting time. The magazine is uniquely positioned for advertisers and interactive marketers to reach an important and affluent target audience. The typical Genre reader is younger and wealthier than those in our competitive set. I will be looking to capitalize on the great demographics we offer our local and national advertisers.
Spoken like a true publisher.
While we've never met Kapfer in person, we hear he's a real mensch. We also hear he's so nice that he and his Starbucks lawyer boyfriend are willing to do anything for the pub's Finnish receptionist, Rene Andersen. Although, that's a rumor that's been floating around for ages. Whether or not it's true…well, we can't say. But, if it is true, it's certainly delicious.
Here's the release we have:

NO MORE GAY PUBLISHING NEWS
We don't care.
I haven't read Genre in years — has it gotten less boring and less uppity?
Nice cover though — looks like they've gone the Instinct route. I guess now I have no choice but to buy it, because I want to know how to get Keith's gym-free ripped body…
