Thank you George Takei for the retaliation video which is absolutely great and for the courage to come out to the public. True fans of Star Trek still love you and it takes a lot of guts to come out in a later stage of life. I understand completely why you waited so long as it would have been a career ruining mistake to do so years ago. I especially love your cameos in recent sitcoms and movies. For everyone who does come out, it helps motivate others to do so. This in turn helps with the further advancement of equality and repealing discrimination laws that affect most everyone who is gay. I have no doubt that being gay is a genetic trait, like blond hair or blue eyes. People who are not gay do not realize that it is not a choice and it’s not the only thing there is to being a gay human being. It’s just the one aspect that straight people seem to dwell on. When I came out ten years ago, I lost some “so called” friends, but found some great new ones as well. It’s very hard to deal with growing up knowing that you are different and people like yourself are extremely helpful and inspiring to those who struggle with this issue. If only the rest of Hollywood was as courageous as the few great personalities like yourself, Ellen, Neil Patrick Harris, and so many others in the industry.
Westbrook Baptist Church is a bunch of nut jobs that I would consider more of a terrorist or militia organization. I can not even fathom that anyone would be so disrespectful as to show up at a military funeral in the manner that they do with their protest signs yelling insulting comments. These are the people who have sacrificed their lives so that ignorant groups of brainwashed idiots can actually act in this manner. Obviously god doesn’t hate gays as much as cult leaders. This is the most aggressive group of anti gay individuals I have ever had the displeasure of seeing and reading about.
This is one of a few groups of individuals that the US government needs to take more interest in and monitor. They should audit the church, investigate their actions as hate crimes, and find out just what they are capable of doing to harm others. Does anyone even know if this group has an arsenal of weapons or more destructive agendas planned other than just protesting? This organization, which I s right under our noses, could in fact be a bigger threat to innocent people than any foreign threat. How can anyone protest a military funeral, judge others, and think that they are Christians.
People use religion to justify all kinds of hatred and bigotry. Religion is poison.
@Billy Budd: You are welcome. Remember who have say “Religion is the poison for the mass” try Vladimir Lenin, 1917.
That was “opium of the people” – Karl Marx, 1844.
@ingyaom: Religion is just another way men have tried to control others over the years. That’s why I am agnostic. There are too many types of regions and variations of each denomination that it’s like choosing a country club. You find one that lets you do what you want and join. Does anyone honestly believe that a old man built an ark, collected two of every animal and set sail until the floods stopped. How did he feed these animals? Why didn’t the Lions eat everything. What about fish and saltwater animals. It’s a nice little fairy tell, but one used to scare people into following wack jobs like this one.
Karl Marx wasn’t far wrong when he called religion “The opiate of the masses”. Religion is very much like morphine – used wisely, it can ease suffering and numb pain; used unwisely or by those with corrupt hearts, it can lead to addiction, nausea, vomiting, and death.
Well, maybe I’m stretching my analogy just a bit. The point I am trying to make is, when it’s done properly, religion can be a force for good in the world. If someone doesn’t believe, that’s fine. Let’s not make the mistake of assuming all religious folk are like the WBC, and let’s not make the mistake of being intolerant of loving faith just because we don’t share it. Hatred, yes, be as intolerant of intolerance as you please, but I’m not going to sneer at someone who is doing good work just because they believe in Jesus (or Whoever)
