Georgetown Officials Admit Gay Hate Crime Cover Up

healyhallarch-2.jpg
Georgetown University has admitted attempting to cover up an alleged hate crime involving Bush-family friend Philip Cooney. Boi From Troy reports that gay group GU Pride met with administrators after yesterday’s protest. One attendee tells BFT:

…At the meeting, GU Pride got them to admit their mistake in not reporting the hate crime incident sooner and to take the group’s grievances to the president personally. Vice President for Student Affairs Todd Olson agreed to the formation of a new LGBT working group composed of faculty, administrators, and students to begin to make visible changes to Georgetown’s LGBT policies.

Nice to know the school’s taking this shit seriously, although it would have been better had it come before the negative press.

Hardly a surprising act by Georgetown, given that it’s a Catholic and Jesuit institution at its core. I think the end result shows remarkable persuasiveness and persistence by GU Pride. Yay them!

This isn’t the only occasion of anti-gay incidents at Georgetown University. I and several other people I know have also been victims. We reported the incidents, but the university was always looking out to protect itself from any legal liabilities.

Thanks GU Pride — what happened was completely unacceptable. The university has the responsibility of providing a safe environment for their student body — covering their butts just because a crime was comitted by a wealthy and well-connected person doesn’t excuse them from that responsibility. As a grad student at GU, I expect a full report and action taken asap.

Thanks GU Pride – I saw how hard they were working to have that petition signed. What has been going on at GU is completely unacceptable. GU has a responsibility to provide a safe environment for its students. Just because that attacker is well-endowed and well-connected doesn’t excuse GU from their commitment. As a GU grad student, I expect a full report and action to be taken asap. I refuse to support (with my hard-earned tuition money) an institution that shield attackers instead of victims.

I don’t know much about GU, I know it’s policies. Now people are taunting other blog-sites in Cooney’s defense. It’s funny how people are blurred by someone with a nice personality, good-looks and character; serial killers often share the same traits.

Has the name of the victim been released yet? I would like to find out who this is just to get a wider understanding of the story. danseurboy@yahoo.com: email me info if ya can titled GUHC please…thanks!
