GLAAD Names New Officers, Board Member; Continues To Refocus In 2012

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation named new officers to its National Board of Directors today: Michael Lammon (left), formerly GLAAD treasurer, joins Sheri Fults as the co-chair of the National Board of Directors. John Stephens is stepping into the treasurer role and  Thom Reilly serving as secretary.

Also joining the board as a member is Kevin Oldis, human-resources VP at CBS. Oldis has volunteered as a HR consultant with the nonprofit for the past 11 years.

“With recent legal victories for LGBT people and public support for our community at an all-time high, GLAAD’s work to highlight the common ground and humanity that all Americans share is critical to continuing this momentum towards equality,” said Fults in a statement. “We could not do this culture-changing work without the dedication of our board of directors, staff, supporters and members across the country.”

GLAAD is coming off a tough year or so: Some 11 employees were laid off in January and, months prior, the organization feltthe blowback from its initial endorsement of a now-cancelled AT&T/T-Mobile merger and the resignation of former director Jarrett Barrios. “It’s no secret that GLAAD experienced some real challenges in 2011,” Thompson told The Advocate last month.

The search is still on for a new permanent president for GLAAD—Mike Thompson currently serves as interim director.

I’d like to see GLAAD engage in less word-policing and engage in more effective shame campaigns.

And none of that HRC-style extortion (MegaCorp makes generous donation to HRC, HRC gives them a positive rating regardless of how MegaCorp deals with its gay employees), or HRC-style partisan bullshit (high-ranking but anti-equality Democrats worshipped like they’re our holy fucking redeemers).

GLAAD need to be the effective media go-to and political advocacte HRC refuses to be, because HRC is simply too busy trying to suck money out of Wall Street’s cock and begging forgiveness from the Democratic party for forcing it to abuse and neglect us.

We are a sufficient number of voters that we can make or break elections. There’s no reason we don’t deserve the same kind of pandering from politicians and corporations that other communities take for granted.

      We haven’t demanded it yet.

      It’s time.

I honestly wish I could work for either GLAAD or HRC from the ground up. I’d turn them away from their corporate ass kissing and back to their true root causes. I still believe the root causes are there, but far too wrapped up in Galas and highly paid board membes and corporate pandering to be seen for what they are and serve their true purposes.
