Glee‘s Chris Colfer takes home the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in TV Series, Miniseries, or TV Movie. One small step for out homosexual actors, one giant leap for high school musicals. He says during his acceptance speech: “Most importantly, to all the amazing kids that watch our show, and the kids that our show celebrates, who are constantly told ‘no’ by the people and the environments, by bullies at school, that they can’t be who they are or have they want want because of who they are, well: screw that, kids.” He told reporters backstage, “I hate to say Cinder-fella. I feel like it tonight. I’ve watched the Golden Globes since I was an embryo. I won’t remember any of this. I kinda blacked out. I thought it was going to be Eric Stonestreet. I was rooting for him.” MORE: Annette Bening wins the Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical award for The Kids Are All Right; the film wins Best Comedy Or Musical. Glee wins Best TV Series, Comedy or Musical. (Backstage, Lynch says she, not Lea Michelle, is the diva of the show.) Recently engaged Jim Parons wins for Best Actor in TV Comedy or Musical for The Big Bang Theory, which he also won an Emmy for. Jane Lynch wins Best Supporting Actress in a TV Series, Mini-Series or Movie for Glee; she thanks her wife during her speech.
Yes, friends, this appears to be the gayest Golden Globes on record.
And of course, Ricky Gervais’ opening monologue wasn’t to be missed, not when there’s an anonymous shout out to some closeted Scientologists.

How about we take this to the next level?

Halelujah! I am so happy I could bust!
christopher di spirito
Congrats Chris! You deserve it!
The Artist
Congrats! PEACELUVNBWILDYALL!
testington
so happy for him! What a great young performer
Ian
On the red carpet he said he’d like to cover either more Lady Gaga or the queer band the Scissor Sisters. A Golden Globe win gives him a little more clout in that area and his high alto pitch is PERFECT to cover the Scissor Sisters!
Jo
Just a heads up, that clip of Gervais is from last year…
Tom
Erm, so where exactly was the shoutout in that clip?
Carl
Congratulation to Chris. He is fantastic on Glee. Deserved the win!
Chuck
I am so excited for Chris. What an amazing and talented person. He is a true gay icon and American hero.
Ryan
Cheers to Chris.
Adam
How is he a gay icon and American hero? He hasn’t actually done anything but act on a television show.
Blackmattachine
Kudos to Mr. Colfer on his big win. Here’s hoping we see great things from him.
On a different note, do you think “Cute” is a useful evaluation for a news item?
Blake J
@Adam:
He is on an internationally popular television series as an openly gay teenage boy, which does not shy away from bullying or romantic interests.
Plus he is also outspoken in his real life.
So bitterness should be expelled on someone else.
jason
There was nothing there worth noting. Chris Colfer avoided even saying the word “gay”. Are we still the love that dare not speak its name? Seems like it. Shame on you, Chris.
As for the movies, where on earth were our lives, our loves, and our sexiness? Nowhere, unfortunately. I did not see one single solitary movie that depicted us or even integrated us as gay and bisexual men.
Shame on you, Hollywood. You continue to be homophobic towards male-male sexuality. I don’t see why we should continue supporting you.
Jeffree
@Jason: Shame on you for being ashamed of your gay/lesbian brethren. Where are your long-awaited comments on Jim, Jane, and Annette? Have you lost your mojo?
BTW: Glee is a TV show (that box with pictures in it that your n.urse won’t let you watch), not a movie. You know the difference, right?
@The Other Jason: Hi!
@Adam: Nice to meet you!

@Everyone else.
Also glad to see Lisa Cholodenko’s movie with Julianne Moore & A. Bening be recognized. Great movie. Yep, I cried…..
jason
There was nothing on male homosexuality in the Golden Globes save for some puerile joke uttered by Ricky Gervais regarding certain Scientologists. Is this what it’s all come to? All this talk about Hollywood being progressive and inclusive has boiled down to silly jokes? How utterly, utterly sad.
Face it – we’re dealing with one heck of a homophobic institution in Hollywood. It is extremely homophobic regarding the concept of male-male sexuality. The sooner you wake up to it, the better. Our culture war must be aimed at Hollywood. It’s time we fought it, not sucked up to it.
Hollywood is completely and utterly hostile to the concept of male-male sexuality. It’s time you realized it.
Samson
@Adam: So true – he’s cute but let’s not go crazy!
MarkOfAntares
Well, unlike some posters, I have no qualms with being happy for someone: Congratulations on your Golden Globe Award! Good for you!
Jeffree
@Jason: Hola loca: try reading the post and the & the comments *BEFORE* posting a follow up.
Oh, wait: I forgot: Glee (the show which you’re not alllowed to watch) features male-male attraction and relationships. You’ve never seen it.
For Real
@Chuck: Yeah, right up there with Harvey Milk and the Stonewall Gang, god, get a grip.Chris’s comment about “fairy” godfather regarding the nasty Mr. Murphy was spot on though.
damendo
@Adam: I agree with Adam. I would say Chris is a good gay role model. But gay icon and American Hero……no, not yet. Nevertheless, congrats on your win.
Chris
I’m sorry, but I don’t buy the “good gay role model”. The first season of Glee featured him stalking and trying to convert a straight guy. The next tried to be anti-bullying, but had the bully be a closet case, and then apologized for all the bullying that that everyone else faced. His character is a gay stereotype, but it is for the lulz, and now teenage girls all over can pity him.
Now he is in a romance that hasn’t involved anything romantic, despite this show being clear on issues of virginity and pregnancy for the straight members.
TJ
@Chris: This show does nothing but continue to portray bad gay stereotypes that now get cheezy globe awards – sad.
Red
Good for gim. But I just don’t see this is a small step for out homosexual actors. He is playing the flamboyant gay charactor in a musical comedy TV show. What’s new realy? We know what will happen to him after Glee is over. He will be pigeonholed into playing feminine gay characters.
David Ehrenstein
@Red: For as we all know REAL gay men are BUTCH TO THE MAX! So true Miss Thing.
DR
@Chuck:
Uhm no.
As others have said, kudos for being out. Kudos for really good acting. Kudos for the win.
Come back in twenty years, and if he still has a healthy career and legacy of public activism, then we can revisit whether he’s a “gay icon” or “American hero”.
Gil
He’ll have a strong career as long as there are feminine gay male roles available.
scribe
I’m sure to gay teen aged boys across america being bullied or thinking about coming out he is an icon and their hero. I wish there was someone like him when I was 14 and figuring things out about myself. I wish the young man only the best. He does a good job.
Mountainword
Wow these comments made it all the way to Number 11 before they turned hateful.
*sheesh*
randy
Who is that really hot presenter?
Condenasty
Um, so many haters. Yes, Chris’ role on Glee is not ideal but it is much better than what I grew up with in the 80s. Jack Tripper mincing about on Three’s Company pretending to be gay and don’t get me started of the leathermen doing the tango at the Blue Oyster Bar in the Police Academy films…. We are getting there it may just take another generation or two.
MM
“I’m sure to gay teen aged boys across america being bullied or thinking about coming out he is an icon and their hero.”
Give us a break and stop insulting real heroes and gay icons.
Pat
The speech was amazing of course.
But his completely stunned look was the best. You could see his brain working with “did they say my name….. wait they are playing our music…… wait people are pushing me forward….. holy crap I won…”
Adam
@Blake J: I’m sorry, but that does not make him a gay icon nor an American hero, IMO. He is an entertainer, and there were openly gay entertainers before him and of course there will be after him. There’s no bitterness here, it’s just that I’m not going to apply those labels to him if he’s undeserving of them. To kids, or those that look to the entertainment industry as their source of all things liberating and progressive, he may be, but the rest of us don’t feel that way.
The activists, lawyers, professors, politicians, and other members of society that aren’t in the spotlight, yet advocating change and making things happen, are the people that should be held in high regard, not this kid who just happened to audition for the show and be cast in it.
RomanHans
Great night for the days, though personally I thought “The Kids are All Right” sucked. Yeah, lesbian relationships are really pretty boring until a straight white dude turns up. Plus, exactly how many LGBT people were involved in the making of that film? My total so far is ONE.
RomanHans
Great night for the gays, and congrats all around. Personally, though, I thought “The Kids are All Right” sucked. jason
Chris Colfer does not represent me as a gay man.
jason
Chris was just there so that the fake gay advocates in Hollywood can say to us:
“Oh, look, aren’t we gay friendly? He’s so cute, he makes us cry. Oh, look, the cute gay guy that we all love. Look at the twinkle in his eye. He’ll make a great comical sidekick when he gets cast in all those gay movies we’re planning. You gay guys should shut the fuck up. Look at how accepting we are of this cute gay guy with a lisp.”
Soupy
Are the fake gay advocates the same people as the fake bisexuals? I’m not sure which conspiracy theory that you’re on.
Gigi
@Adam:
icon: a person or thing regarded as a symbol of a belief, nation, community, or cultural movement
Chris is most certainly an icon, due to the fact that he’s openly gay and has reached a level of success that few of us will ever achieve. When I was a young kid growing up in a small town in the last ’80s, I could have never imagined that our world would change to such an extent. On a day-to-day basis we forget how much progress we’ve made. It’s easy to do so, and it’s easy to get discouraged when all we seem to hear is the hate and vitriol coming from the whackjobs from NOM, et al. It’s sheer madness! I live in Canada, where gay marriage has been legal since 2005 and I’m here to tell you that NOTHING HAS CHANGED in reference to the straight marriages being affected. Suck it NOM!
Gigi
@jason:
Who cares if Colfer doesn’t represent you as a gay man? How does that have anything to do with the fact that he won a Golden Globe? I really don’t understand you gay homophobes. He’s not butch enough for you so therefore he somehow denigrates your image? Grow up. Funnily enough, I don’t think he really cares that you’re not happy with his representation of anything or anyone. 🙂
Casey
God, his voice is horrible.
Kieran
So let’s see…..Chris Colfer is a GOOD representative for gay men, but Reichen Lehmkuhl is BAD? Oy vey, no wonder so many people still think gay = a girl trapped inside a male body.
Soupy
Reichen just represents vacuity and shallowness, gay or straight. Plastic people represent no one.
Kieran
Good looks along with a hot, sexy body easily trumps vacuity and shallowness any day of the week.
LOL
“Chris is most certainly an icon, due to the fact that he’s openly gay and has reached a level of success that few of us will ever achieve”
Don’t be silly,
you obviously don’t understand the meaning of the word ‘idol’.
LOL

Soupy
Kieran, you would have to be vacuous and shallow to believe that. So he probably does represent you.
Kim
He is not an “icon” but he is a role model especially for teens
justiceontherocks
@Kieran – so your role model is a publicity whore with no discernible talent, and you put down an award winning gay actor because he isn’t butch enough for you. You are an icon for shallow nitwits.
Kieran
I didn’t put down anybody…..I’m just pointing out different strokes for different folks. You relate to Chris Colfer and his type, that’s fine. Others of us relate more to Reichen’s type. That’s fine too. No need for the usual childish name-calling or hissy fit.
Soupy
But Reichen’s “type” is a cardboard cutout. How do you relate to that?
Only for the Hype
They only won because they’re the “in” thing since Gaga. Congratulations to them for winning! They’ll never be winning after this anyway.
