“The San Francisco-based Gay and Lesbian Medical Association said Monday it’s giving its 2008 Achievement Awards to Kaiser Permanente, the Lambda Legal advocacy group and Judy Bradford, a prominent researcher on related issues at Boston’s Fenway Institute. The awards will be presented at GLMA’s Annual Gala Banquet in Seattle on October 25, sponsored by Pfizer… It said its annual achievement awards are given to people or groups that display an ‘exemplary commitment’ to improving the quality of health care for [LGBT] individuals, improving the professional environment for LGBT health-care workers, or contributing significantly to gains made by the LGBT ‘civil rights movement.'” [Biz Journals]

It makes me angry that Kaiser Permanente is receiving any award despite the fact that Kaiser can be a great place to receive care. There are wonderful things Kaiser does; for example, they offer health care benefits to domestic partners of Kaiser employees and Kaiser has been at the forefront of welcoming GLBT members and trying to be sensitive to their particular health needs. What Kaiser will not do, at least still in Hawaii, is to offer to cover same sex partners in their health plans. For example, it costs my company almost $400/month to cover me through Kaiser. If I was married, it would cost another $400/month to cover my spouse and Kaiser will happily take that additional $400/month. My company is willing to pay the $400/month to cover my domestic partner (boyfriend), but Kaiser refuses to offer that domestic partner coverage while offering it to their own employees. It makes me angry that my $400/month goes to pay for Kaiser employees’ domestic partners’ health benefits when Kaiser refuses to cover my boyfriend.
