Among queer media folk—and probably the general public—it’s widely known that Chicklet-smile weatherman Sam Champion, who makes the precipitation predictions on Good Morning America, sings “It’s Raining Men” when no one is looking.
Well, it looks like Champion has officially come out at last, and in the pages of the New York Times, no less. But it wasn’t in a revealing interview—it’s in fellow newsguy Thomas Roberts’ marriage announcement in the “Vows” section.
Way to bogart someone else’s moment, Sam! (We’re joking, sort of.)
The Times wrote up Thomas’ wedding to partner Patrick Abner in an item that will see print on Sunday. About halfway through, reporter Jacob Bernstein rattles off some of the boldfaced names in attendance:
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
“Among the 170 or so guests at the reception was Sam Champion, the weather anchor at ABC’s “Good Morning America.” He took a turn on the dance floor with his partner, the photographer Rubem Robierb.
“We’re getting married New Year’s Eve in Miami,” Mr. Champion said in the spirit of the moment.
Mr. Robierb corrected him: “We’ll do it here officially, and then have a party in Miami.”
Is this another example of this new trend in low-key celebrity outings? Or has Champion publicly addressed his sexuality before and we missed it? (And no, appearing at an HRC dinner or Pride parade doesn’t count—our mother goes to those things.)
Maybe another GMA personality could take a tip from her colleague?

Don’t pick on Robin Roberts right now, she’s recovering from her bone marrow transplant. Give her time to recover, then you can start up again. Sheesh.

As anyone who watched channel 5 in NYc knew since 1980, Sam was one of us. In the Stonewall parade and the discos, he was a very obvious presence.

Why can’t it be a weatherman I’m attracted to like Jim Cantore, Carl Parker, Mike Bettes or Chris Warren…?

Oh look ! It is the poster boy for who gives a rats ass. I hate NY. The only thing good about NY is oh wait there is nothing good about NY except that Auntie Mame lived there. And that was fiction.
