GOProud’s Christopher Barron: Can’t We All Forget That Ken Mehlman Was a Terrorist To Gays 6 Years Ago?

I’m surprised GLAAD hasn’t issued an alert about Thomas Roberts, the gay former CNN anchor who’s now at MSNBC, using the word “admits” (twice) when discussing Ken Mehlman coming out. But anyhoo, let’s tune in to GOProud’s handsome Christopher Barron insisting Mehlman isn’t any more of a hypocrite or a jerk than the Democrats who lent support to the idea that marriage is for heteros only. Oh, then Barron says it’s time to put “partisan politics” aside. But anyhoo! (Did I say that already?)

The answer to that question ..from me….is NO.

HE is the CAUSE of many of our struggles. I will agree that he is a gay terrorist who should be waterboarded with my piss.

Gee, what a suprise! The GOP token Gay bitch boy association has defended Melhman!

MEMO TO BARON: Maybe no one has actually informed you directly regarding this matter so here it is. The GOP hates you. They give you token nods simply because they may attract a few delusional looney toons like you into casting some votes for repugnatican candidates. Melhman cut a wide swath of destruction thru the Gay community for decades. He did not come out because he suddenly heard the voice of Gay angels singing sweet inspiring Gay tunes and saw the bright shining Gay light. Allegdlly there was some very damming evidence about to see the light of day showing Melhman engaging in some pretty freaky shit.

Lordy, If you think the repugnatican party leadership has a single iota of concern for you, or any member of the Gay community, pretty please run down to the clue store and buy a whole bunch. Because it is so very obvious you do not currently possess a single one………

The newsguy just said he’s gay!? 1:06 – Sweet.

Also, Mehlman has basically been the worst person for gay rights, in the world, over the last decade. He can’t quite be forgiven, but retribution may not be productive. I think we should just encourage him [however firmly, angrily or kindly] to use his connections and wealth in our favor.

What does Barron care about Mehlman, anyways? The main reason for the GoProud/LCR split was because the GoProuders thought that the LCR was putting too much emphasis on gay rights at the expense of rhetoric about tax cuts and bombing brown people. GoProud’s happy with the current state of affairs. They’ve got theirs.

The biggest thing an average person can do for fellow gays is to come out, but Ken is not the average person. The biggest thing Ken could have done would be to have not inflicted all that harm or to have come out when it would have been taking a stand against the hate he was participating in. Now he’s responsible for what he’s done, and coming out doesn’t wash it away especially when he’s still contributing thousands to anti-gay candidates.

I haven’t seen him on FOX News, and I’ve read they haven’t even mentioned him coming out. The right wingers who have actually liked Ken and oppose gay rights, the people his coming out might be a bit helpful with, are not even hearing about it.

The angry, unforgiving message many of you ANONYMOUS posters are foolishly sending out is more likely to keep a Senator Lindsay Graham or a Fox News’ Shepherd Smith IN the closet, rather than OUT. Why would they want to deal with the bitchy pettiness of “the community”? People coming out—whether Democrat or Republican— should be cause for CELEBRATION, not partisan politics. The gay community needs all the friends and allies it can get, from WHATEVER party.

I would hope that the gay community is collectively intelligent enough not to unreservedly welcome people into the fold.

I’ll likely drive myself insane reiterating this, but what the hell: community entails responsibilities. And I think most gays would agree me when I state that Mehlman broke the most important (yet very minimal in terms of effort) responsiblity: don’t campaign against gay rights.

Mehlman gets forgiven when he does something more than cushion his betrayal by saying that he was trying to discover himself, or making pathetic attempts to recruit gays to the Republicans by pointing out how much Muslim theocrats hate us.

We can appreciate your defending your boy, on every thread you are right there defending him and asking us to embrace him. Unfortunately he has more than proven he is not a friend nor an ally of the Gays. He has proven to be incorrigable and done some very bad things to the Gays with that bad republican crowd he has been running with. Rumor has it there are some pretty disturbing videos about to surface showing Kenny playing with some of his friends doing things I am not sure you may approve of. @Zach: I’m not sure betrayal is quite right, unless you mean in the sense of self. Certainly, he’s duplicitous, and what he did, and is continuing to do, is taking care of Ken first. Money is obviously important to Ken, and political power was the ride that made him rich. But, nobody should kid themselves to think that Ken ever wielded enough power to influence a GOP change in stance with regard to opposition to same sex marriage. Ken was never that important. Don’t forget, Mehlman was forced to step down as chairman of the RNC when the Republicans lost both the House and Senate in the mid-terms of 2006. At that time, Mehlman stated his goal had been to tighten the GOP’s grip on power in Washington. Well, it didn’t work, and to this end, Ken was a failure. Losing is not an option in Washington, regardless of who you are, or who you know. On the subject of “forgiveness” for Ken? Not from me, and seriously, why bother? Look, Ken got what he wanted for Ken, and those who got hurt, were those who were in his way. Now, Ken is back, looking for whatever is best for Ken. Self-serving people like Ken have no need for forgiveness or sympathy, rather acceptance from others is the goal. Should Ken have all he desires? You decide, but I’m convinced life doesn’t work that way.

      @Bill Perdue:

What are you, a Rage Against the Machine music video?

You want to talk about Obama and the Democrats? Fine.

He has a host of failings, most of which were apparent before he was even running in the primaries. He was also the best shot at winning, even in the face of eight years of utter desolation from Bush. The fact that Obama didn’t win seventy percent of the vote is testament to the deep-seated hostility and idiocy that runs through American society.

And as a President, he’s had a ton of failures, and a lot of initiatives that don’t go nearly far enough. He was too cautious and conciliatory. The Democrats could have easily stomped the Tea Party by carrying their own populist narrative: the ones railing against us want higher taxes for the middle-class, lower taxes for the upper-class. They’re also the ones who want to deregulate an already-dangerously deregulated society.

But they (and he) didn’t. They let this vile mob mentality fester into a cancer. And now the Democrats are going to take a hit in November.

But do you know who’s also going to take a hit? Us. And any hope of legislative change for at least two years. However incremental and minute change has been in the past eighteen months, it still happened.

The Democrats are generally corrupt, usually spineless, and there to stay in power, first and foremost. But nothing legislatively will ever be done for gay people under the Republicans. Nothing.

I despise Obama’s politicking, and I think it’s usually ineffectual. At this point, I don’t think his pretending to be against gay marriage is really winning him any votes. And I think the Democrats would make significant gains if they started engaging the Tea Party and stopped wearing kid gloves when it comes to right-wing idiocy.

But I’m not a complete and utter fucking idiot who thinks that we wouldn’t be worse off – either as a nation as a whole or gay people specifically – than we would be under the Republicans.

It’s fucking politics. You know what happens if you turn against your shitty allies? You have no allies left. And your agenda goes nowhere. You hold the Dems’ feet to the fire, punish the conservative-leaning ones, and you keep fighting. You don’t stop, and you don’t whine about how all politicians are alike and that it makes no difference.

Or maybe you don’t want progress? Maybe you’re satisfied to be the malcontent, always having something to bitch about, and you realize that by having impossible and immediate expectations about getting everyone in a divided country of 300 million, you can continue playing the malcontent.

I figured you were a Demobot and that’s what prompted your little rant.

You think Palin would be worse than Obama?

Would Palin or General David Petraeus of New York escalate the murder of GIs and civilians from Palestine to Pakistan?

Would Palin or Jeb Bush of Florida reward the looter class with trillions, bust unions and impose austerity programs on working people?

Would Palin or Newt Gingrich of Georgia push the passage of a health care scam that enriches insurance companies and HMOs while allowing them deny good health care to most patients and kill some of them by denying them needed treatment?

Would Palin or Huckabee of Arkansas support FISA and the Paytriot Act.

Would Palin or Ron Paul of Texas sit on their asses while the Gulf of Mexico was turned into a sewer?

Would Palin or Mitt Romney of Massachusetts refuse to end the Clinton policy of kidnapping, torturing and murdering civil and military opponents, including a fifteen year old boy with grievous wounds.

Would Palin or Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania ‘robustly’ prosecute Private First Class Bradley Manning, a hero of the antiwar and gay communities.

Would Palin or Haley Barbour of Mississippi do all they could to defend Clintons DADT and DOMA and stop the passage of ENDA.

Yes they would, which makes them no better than Obama and the vast majority of Congressional Democrats, who’ve already done that and worse.

Right now you are an absolutely clueless moron. When you figure out that both parties are the enemy you’ll have taken the first step towards political maturity.

      Demo-bot?!

I’m a little rusty on my playground taunts. Is this the part where I tell you that I am rubber and you are glue?

Do I think McCain/Palin would be worse? That’s a hard question to answer, not because I think they would be better but because it should be a Republican in office who has to deal with and get blamed for the shit sandwich that George W Bush laid on the American people. Now the perception isn’t that Republicans caused a crisis but that Democrats failed to make things better. The way it stands Obama took office JUST as the economy hit the shitter and since he’s in office he’s perceived to own it and he’s blamed for it. I don’t think anyone could be doing better at fixing the problem but it would be nice to see a Republican standing there trying to stamp out the flaming bag of poo they created.

Personally, I believe that when Democrats get into the situation where they CAN’T lose they make bad choices. Jimmy Carter is a fine man, a man of principles, honor, and integrity, but it doesn’t necessarily follow that, in the wake of the Watergate scandal when Democrats could have won if they nominated a ham sandwich, he was the best choice for the job.

The same thing goes for Obama. There, I said it. Stirring rhetoric, yadda yadda yadda, but he wasn’t experienced enough, seasoned enough, for the Presidency. But God forbid you tried to tell his supporters that because to their mind the only possible reason you didn’t support Obama was that you were a racist. What they never saw was that things had been handed to Obama due to his rhetorical gifts and he had never in his life faced real resistance. He was too used to being able to sway any audience and always being liked. Faced with real adversity for the first time in his life instead of admiration, he didn’t know how to handle it and compromise was his first impulse. What’s bizarre is that, instead of blaming Republicans and Teabaggers for refusing to even agree the sky is blue, he and his administration instead blame the “Left” for his failures.

Barack Obama had the most powerful coalition of voters seen in recent memory but he squandered it on trying to reach “consensus” with a group that wouldn’t piss on him if he was on fire. Better yet, it’s not their fault for their opposition, it’s the Left’s fault for trying to hold him to his promises.

All in all, it probably would have been better if a Republican had been in office when the shit really hit the fan.

How in the world can you actually allow your fingers to type the words “Private First Class Bradley Manning, a hero of the antiwar and gay communities.”???

I was 100% in favor of the initial phase of the war, going into Afghanstan to seek out Bin Ladin. However GW suddenly did an about face and decided to march into Iraq leaving us with the clusterfuck we now face, and will deal with for decades. You can be against the war. However once we are there we need to support and protect the soldiers on the ground. Manning is a traitor plain and simple. He had high level security clearances, took an oath to protect them and knowingly lifted documents which were classified leaked them to a source where the enemy could access them. There is zero debate here. What he did was wrong. And his actions damaged the movement to repeal DADT. He put fellow soldiers including thousands of Gay and Lesbian soldiers lives at risk. And he has brought more misery to everyone of those Gay and Lesbian soldiers. You don’t think the are being harrassed more because of Manning? You don’t think they are getting shittier assignments because of Manning? You don’t think some straight soldiers would be less likely to go the extra mile to protect the life of a Gay soldier??? A hero to the Gay communities? You need to give a good look into the definition of hero……

Nobody says that but prowar types. None of the documents exposed by Wikipedia puts any US soldiers lives at risk. Obama puts their lives at risk.

Those documents will help save them by helping to end the war, just as Ellsburgs Pentagon papers and the exposure of the My Lai massacre helped end the LBJ/Nixon invasion and attempted occupation of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

i’m only wading into this discussion to point out a factual error: there is absolutely no evidence this statement is true. it’s a blatant right wing, military-industrial talking point.

first, there is evidence wikileaks tried to work with the pentagon to redact any sensitive material like names and locations before the initial release of documents. the pentagon refused.

second, there’s this report on msnbc: “An ongoing Pentagon review of the massive flood of secret documents made public by the WikiLeaks website has so far found no evidence that the disclosure harmed U.S. national security or endangered American troops in the field, a Pentagon official told NBC News on Monday.”

      Look at this video: http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1598407/20081101/story.jhtml

      It establishes four things.

      1) Obama is a bigot, a religious bigot.

      2) His only objection to Prop 8 is a tactical objection. He said it was unnecessary because bigot Bill Clintons DOMA was, as is, despite Obama’s promises, the bigoted law of the land.

      3) Obama, like Hillary Clinton and other assorted Democrat and Republican rightwingers is for settling this on a state by state basis, a “states rights” strategy. States rights, lest we forget, has been a favored Democrat strategy from the time of Jefferson Davis thru George Wallace and is now the Democrats way of avoiding the fight for same sex marriage.

      4) Obama is our political enemy.

It also explains why jimmy likes Obama. Demobots excuse Obama’s racism, his homohating bigotry, the fact that he’s a tool of the rich and that his policies are murdering GI’s and civilians in a war for oil. Obots like jimmy approve of Obama because they too are racists, homohaters and war supporters.

      Can we forget? No.

Can we forgive? If he apologises sincerely, without trying to make all kinds of stupid excuses, then we really should try to. I mean, wouldn’t the best solution be for all these gay republicans to come out and say, ‘Hey, we screwed up”? I for one welcome it.

The journey can be very hard for some. And while the ramifications of his actions are certainly far-reaching and disastrous, we do no service to ourselves by continuing to hate him.

I ran into an ex-army buddy who I recall being a homophobic jerk for most of the years I’ve known him (many people in the army are – it’s a machismo thing). He’s come out of the closet since then and it’s been awkward for him. He’s getting married next month… some masquerade themed shindig (fuck, I still need to get my outfit together). People do change from being jerks to being decent human beings – and I say huzzah.

Probably because “certain people” don’t want lies about them to be taken as the truth through shear repetition. You can help by giving Bill Perdue a “thumbs down” whenever he launches a mindless personal attack, as opposed to him expressing an opinion on an issue that you happen to disagree with. If enough people do that, his behavior may improve and what you call a “pissing match” will be mitigated – people are less likely to react to personal attacks from him that are hidden because of negative ratings.

He also promotes the racist view that AA’s play a big role in defeating same sex marriage.

He’s beem criticized by dozens of people on as many threads for his defense of anti-gay and self loathing bigots so now he wants to censor his critics and he whines relentlessy about it.

      http://www.queerty.com/if-the-tea-party-wants-a-war-theyve-got-one-kristi-allen-gailushas-is-great-edition-20100908/
“The jew Tea Parties are a zionist scheme. The looter class rips off the money from the right wing hillbillies and uses it to fund the oppression of Palestinians while fooling them into believing they should be allowed to keep their money. Typical of the jew-dominated Republican and Democrat oppressors who will do anything to trick people into oppressing the poor, and especially the heroic Palestinian struggle against the racist jew zionist oppressors.”

Then he goes back to bashing Demorcats. Trying real hard to be some kind of neutral nut but we all know you’re an angry former Hillary butt boy turned GOP pig.
