Contrary to popular belief, Imitation Game screenwriter Graham Moore isn’t gay. He’s just a flamboyantly straight guy who wrote a great script about the heroic gay man who saved civilization and was rewarded with bigotry. Or “weird,” as he put it during his Oscar acceptance speech on Sunday night. Attaboy, Girl.
While speaking to press after his big win, Moore addressed the notion that blew up Twitter the moment he was handed the Academy Award for best adapted screenplay from Ms. Oprah Winfrey herself.
“I’m not gay,” he told reporters backstage. “But I’ve never talked publicly about depression before or any of that and that was so much of what the movie was about.”
Could’ve fooled us. But, then again, with more and more people refusing to conform to preconceived gender and sexuality stereotypes, our gaydar ain’t what is used to be. Straight guys and gay guys are blending together. It’s all a bit confusing, but a bit exciting at the same time. The world is changing, and we are all queer now. (And that’s a very good thing!)
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Check out these other straight guys who give off major gay vibes…
Josh Hutcherson
We’ve always gotten major gay vibrations from 22-year-old pretty boy Josh Hutcherson. Maybe the perfectly plucked eyebrows… Or the leaked nude selfies… Or the fact that in 2013 he ignited gay rumors when he said, “Right now I’m 100% straight. But who knows? In a fucking year, I could meet a guy and be like, Whoa, I’m attracted to this person.”
Trey Songz
The well-dressed hip hop crooner became the subject of rumors after a tweet that appeared to be written by him emerged in March 2014. It read: “I think it’s time to finally tell my fans. all games and jokes aside… I’m gay.” The singer later said the tweet was photoshopped, much to our disappointment. And don’t let his taste for well-tailored luxury designer threads fool you either. He’s just metrosexual.
Daniel Radcliffe
The child-star-turned-total-hunk has been a gay ally for years. In 2009, he teamed up with The Trevor Project to promote awareness of gay teen suicide prevention and has been a vocal advocate for equal rights for LGBT people. Then in 2013, he treated us to a steamy gay sex scene in the film Kill Your Darlings, as well as several full frontal nude shots. But don’t get too excited, boys. He’s been dating actress Erin Darke since 2012.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Speculation about the 34-year-old actor’s sexuality began after he played a male prostitute in the film Mysterious Skin, followed by a minor role in gay rom-com Latter Days. Gay rumors followed him for years afterwards and were only intensified in 2013 when he refused to address them during an interview with Out. A lot of folks assumed that meant he must like dudes. But then in December 2014 he surprised everyone when he married Tasha McCauley. (Whomp, whomp.)

Josh Hutcherson and Daniel Radcliffe give me more of a bi vibe than anything else. Then again there are no openly bisexual A-list male actors whatsoever in Hollywood… None that I can even think of off the top of my head. Everyone’s either 100% straight or gay. Or so they would have us believe. 😉
I wonder what the probability might be that in a theatrical field, bisexuals don’t exist at all?
Probably somewhere between slim, and none.

None of these guys set off my gaydar.

Being that Graham Moore used the pronoun “her” a lot when referring to a young girl out there who felt weird, I was thinking maybe Graham Moore could possibly be like Kimberly Reed. Kimberly Reed was featured on Oprah’s segment “A Transgender Woman’s Journey” a few years back. She was formally Paul McKerrow before her reassignment. She was thought of as a lesbian woman trapped in man’s body.
Other than that, all the other guys don’t set off my gaydar.
cutekurt_lush
um you guys know that Channing Tatum is openly bi sexual. just FYI and hes an A list actor.
jwtraveler
Wow! That’s the hottest photo of D. Radcliffe that I’ve ever seen. I’m a big fan of Dan and J G-L.
MisterDemand
Am I the only one who found the comments about Moore Queerty wrote to be ridiculous and offensive? Oh well.
dhmonarch89
I think More may be trans as well.

Graham Moore says he’s not gay. Olympic diving champ Tom Daley insisted he wasn’t gay too, remember?
And Joseph Gordon-Levitt married a woman. And that’s supposed to be definitive proof he’s not gay? Elton John, Jann Wenner, Rock Hudson, and too many other gay men to mention married women too…(Whomp, whomp)

So guys set off your gaydar (not bidar, God forbid) if they are LGBT friendly, accept non-straight roles, refuse to address rumors on principle (implying that being gay is bad) or are open to sexual fluidity?
That seems to be backward thinking. If guys like Levitt, Radcliffe and Hutcherson are showing that non-straight sexuality is no different to them than straight sexuality, and that the rumors don’t bother them (like Levitt), that should be applauded. It’s a sign of how things have started to change.
You should be glad that the younger actors are becoming more enlightened. You should NOT be insisting that if they defy the old tropes, it means they’re secretly gay. That just reinforces the ugly old “if you have anything to do with LGBT stuff or don’t think gay means bad, you must be gay yourself!” assumptions, which are very homophobic. The only reason most of these guys set off your gaydar seems to be that they’re not letting bigotry influence their careers.
To be honest, I think most actors (regardless of public orientation) are probably bisexual, no matter what they say they are. Straight-identified, gay-identified, whatever.

@Cagnazzo82: Alan Cumming He wrote an entire article about his bisexuality….

this snide speculation is what leads some straight men to not care for us. fun sometimes in private but not in national mags ect. childish.
Low Country Boy
@MisterDemand: You are not the only one.

It’s curious, i never get the gay vibes from Daniel and Josh, in my opinion they are the type of people who probably come out if they were gay.
The fact both openly speak in favour of gay rights from a young age is not closeted actors standard either.
And i don’t get the transexual talk about Moore, if he was transexual he will use he instead of she.
I think he didn’t deserved the backlash he received, unfortunately there was enough bad blood agains everything related to the imitation game to explode against him.
His speech was great, weird but great anyway
jjose712
On the other hand, Trey Songz videos are like overcompensation all over again. And the fact he is on a genre where coming out is still a career suicide doesn’t help either
Scribe38
It has to be weird for a straight guy when the world thinks he is gay. I’ve known a classmate for two years and most people think he is gay. I’ve come out to people at school and some are pretty surprised and then they say they thought he was the gay one. To his credit he never takes any of it personally and just blames it on being raised in a house by all women. If I hadn’t seen him hit on women and know for a fact he had sex with a female classmate, I would think he was gay too.
Giancarlo85
Just an article fantasizing about straight men. None of these guys give me any gay vibe… And most of them are straight allies. So lets be a bit more respectful.
BuyK
O noes! Someone suggesting a person (who acts like a total bumlord) is a gay!
Is there anything more insulting??? 🙁
Low Country Boy
@BuyK: “Bumlord?” Jesus, I wish Queerty could keep children off of their site.
Giancarlo85
@BuyK: How old are you? 5?
demented
@Kieran: So you assume men are totally gay until it’s somehow magically proven otherwise, and nothing they say or do can demonstrate genuine interest in women?

While I respect what Graham said at the Oscars his weird comment can very easily be misinterpreted as if to say that being gay is “weird”.
I also don’t understand why he automatically had to nullify the concept of being gay as if their was something wrong with it in the first place.
So when it comes to him whilst I respect what he said I also found it somewhat unkind and superior in another way .
I don’t know Im puzzled by him.
BuyK
@Low Country Boy: “Jesus, I wish Queerty could keep children off of their site.”
And anyone with a sense of humour x
Low Country Boy
@BuyK: And anyone with a sense of civility or decorum . . .

Actor Joel Grey won his Academy Award for CABARET (1972) in March 1973, and since then his sexuality has been rather obvious-seeming to many, to say the least. He came out in January of this year, aged 82, nearly 42 years after winning his Oscar.
DuMaurier
I’ll repeat what I said on another story; if you think someone’s gay because he acts “flamboyantly” (Queerty’s term) and has cliched “gay” mannerisms, that isn’t “gaydar”. That’s just thinking stereotypically, and the homophobes over on the Yahoo! comments boards are just as good at that as we are. “Gaydar” is the intution that kicks in when someones DOESN’T fit the cliche.
mydude
I don’t think they’re gay, but I don’t believe for a second that Hutcherson or JGL are straight. The smell very bi/open/heteroflexible to me.
I would be very shocked if they hadn’t at least messed around with a few guys.
dannyboi2
@Scribe38: FYI, before I came out I had 4-5 girl friends and I married and raised a str8 Son, So never say never, I can still take one for the team if I had to keep appearances. That’s why most successful actors are gay, It’s all an act.
wpewen
@jantheman4903: Exactly. Something I’ve always noticed and has intensified as I’ve grown older is how out of sync with straight men some gay guys can be. In the sense that they may be fine with you being gay, but they really hate the bitch talk. And so do I, and some other gay men are like me. I don’t think it’ll ever really change, but just remember-a lot of straight guys don’t give a damn who you fuck, they just want to be out of the equation.
SteveDenver
I differentiate between “setting off gaydar” and “wanting it so badly.” Hutcherson, Radcliffe and Joe G-L fall into the latter category. I know so little about Graham Moore that I was surprised when he didn’t have a British accent.
He was affectionate to the men in his path to the stage and had similar vocality as many of my gay friends — I sound SO GAY it’s like spilling a pretty pink purse when I speak.
I’m glad he is recognized for his work, touched that he shared his personal struggle with alienation and suicide, and wish him a happy and successful life. He is charming and winning.
jimstoic
Moore didn’t say he was straight, did he? He just said he wasn’t gay. That leaves other non-straight options.
I’ll be surprised if Hutcherson does not eventually come out as gay. Radcliffe and Gordon-Levitt strike me as heterosexual men who, like James Franco, are very comfortable with their sexuality and therefore unafraid to test its boundaries.

Mr. Moore certainly missed his calling.
OzJosh
First, Graham Moore is not “flamboyant”, he’s “effeminate”. Come on, Queerty; if you want to boldly leap on the talking points of the day at least have the guts to get your terms right. Or is effeminate now just too difficult a concept to deal with? Well, get over it. Some guys are a bit effeminate. And the funny thing is, the most effeminate guys I’ve ever met were not gay. One I worked with for several decades, who everyone assumed was gay, was very happily married with four kids. People constantly assumed he was secretly gay. He was not. Or that he’d one day boldly come out. He never did. There are many, many men like him, so I’m always a bit astounded when someone like Moore comes along and gay guys who should know better immediately leap to the same prejudiced conclusions: closet case, being the first.
That said, Daniel Radcliffe, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Josh Hutcherson are not effeminate, so there’s no real link to Graham Moore, which makes this whole article doubly dopey.
robho3
Frankly I could care less if their gay, straight or nurtured.

It appears that if you screw both sexes, you are bi (and by inference: not gay!) Well I am gay and been out for over 40 years and from my experience and observations, I would say a majority of men who identify themselves as gay, had sex with a female sometime in their lives.! When I was younger and bar hopping any guy over 30 would probably tell you (if you enquired)that he was either married, divorced and even in a relationship with a female(PC reasons), HOWEVER (EXCEPTIONS NOTED!)THEY PREFERRED sex and a relationship with men over women! In fact, one twink (in a franchise movie) two years ago came out as BI (rumors he was gay) but admitted he was more satisfied having sex with a man than a woman. So, at worst, there is no such thing as being bi and at best, we could be 50 Shades of GAY! Your call!-
